Yeah, I'd check out paracord 750 - The next step up from what you have, which is 5 mm in size. Although, only being 1 mm more, might not make a huge difference.

A lot of people use 1/4 inch (called para-max) which is like 6.4mm. You'd probably be ok with something like this - 1000lb tensile strength. Although that is below 1300, I don't understand what could be stronger than this, I've yet to see any higher than this, so maybe what I said about the rope being stronger is wrong. There's people out there with 3500 magnets, so idk wha they use besides steel cables haha: https://www.amazon.ca/Paracord-Planets-Tensile-Strength-Midnight/dp/B01GK7KW9A/ref=sr_1_2?crid=30JHU7OV8I4SH&keywords=1%2F4+inch+paracord&qid=1564660963&s=gateway&sprefix=1%2F4+inch+para%2Caps%2C154&sr=8-2

Here's what I got - It's still only 550 lb breaking strength but its 8 mm thick! Should make pulling a breeze! This is from Canada, so maybe search for something similar on the .com https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07HML8T9D/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This helped me a lot, it's a size comparison chart showing thickness up to 1/4: https://www.paracordplanet.com/cord-comparison-chart/

I just ordered that for the same magnet you bought. Can't speak from experience yet but the strength is just under double the max pull and it's specifically for magnet fishing. It has good ratings too.

Your boyfriend is right, it's another crazy hobby... but I promise once he sees what you start pulling from the waters he's going to want his own magnet!

Yeah, it's just a thread sealant; keeps the threads from banging loose over time (which they do). UK might have a different version, but loctite is pretty prolific, I'd be surprised if you don't have it. Link below off the US market for reference; this is the blue stuff, which will keep the threads from coming loose, but will still let you remove it if you actively try. Another nut could work, but thread sealer is better for the purpose; it's also cheap, and the tiniest bottle will last a very long time. It only takes a drop or two on the threads.

I also recommend this. Optionally, a five gallon bucket and an ice scraper for scraping small parts off your magnet also come in handy. Most importantly, have fun!

This is the magnet I got and I like it quite well. Excellent for an entry and mid level fishing magnet.

Brute 880, 20% off coupon, first time users of the amazon assistant download can search for it from there and get another 10 bucks off, pick a slower than 2 day free delivery date and they give you a little bit more credit.
turns 46 bucks into 26 faster than I could type this, gp, not counting the 6% back by using the amazon credit card or that annoying no interest for 6 months.

Worked for me, not like that jacked up JC Penny sale for womens swim wear half off. False advertising that day. gp

I mean, you can get this 6700lb (3000kg) lathe shipped free on Prime:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0064BFJ3W/

Though, to be reasonable, the shipping cost is probably built in to the price, considering it's the price of a new car.

u/absw · 3 pointsr/magnetfishing

You can get some good ones for way under that, for example: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01K38XA4G

Though you will need to factor in getting some rope and a karabiner.

As others have said, you are likely to be disappointed with a magnet's actual pull strength. For example, I have a 375lb magnet and I lose things that are not even close to that weight (thank god, I couldn't lift 375 lbs).

Things that reduce the magnet's pull strength are

  • Rust
  • Uneven surface
  • Odd/curved surfaces
  • Obstructions (mud, dirt, sticks)

In my opinion, go with as big a magnet that you can afford and that is within your rope's strength rating.

And remember, you might someday come across that submerged, flat piece of metal and it just might take your magnet. Just the risks of the game I suppose.

Just get one from CMS Magnetics on Amazon. They have a 250# and a 405# for $35 and less with eye hooks.

Heavy-Duty Retrieving and Holding Magnet, 5" Length, 2" Width, 1" Height with Eyebolt, Nut, and Magnetic Shields, 150 Pounds Pull, 1 each https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000CP2PG0/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_Shh8wbCAMQ5KG

This is the one I use. You have to remember though, you're not getting a full contact (all 150lbs of pull) on anything you grab, unless you get full flat contact. That being said, I've never had problems removing items from this magnet

u/SnookiWookieCookie · 7 pointsr/magnetfishing

I bought my little kit on amazon for $25. Came with the rope and everything. I’ll link it.
