Also, if she is a true beginner, do NOT get her the book you linked to! I bought it when I was first learning and it doesn't really teach you how to do anything, it just has examples. The Modern Calligraphy book in the kit I linked to above is way better. I also really like this guide to Chalkboard Lettering - while the style is a bit different, the author has a great breakdown of what letterforms are and how to create them. Flourishing is difficult....in most cases, when beginners flourish, all it shows to a trained eye is that they cant flourish. Start slow and simple....plan, practice repeat. If you have all those questions, you may not be ready to flourish yet. A pencil is your great friend. The standard teaching book for years has been by Bill Hilderbrant
