It's not pretty and very loud by the testing I've done with PID meter shows significant reduction of VOC.
If you have doubts Austin Air HP+ are also very good, quieter, and include an oxidizer inaddition to carbon.
Another good company is Airpura - They may be the best but costly.
The TerraBloom and inline fan are much cheaper, very loud, very effective. The fan may have a slight smell. The TerraBloom is what I use primarily.

Our main bedroom purifier is a Germ Guardian AC5300B which is rated for about 150sq/ft and runs on medium setting all day in our small bedroom (120 sq/ft). Here's the filter (replaced every 6 months):

She dusts (using Clorox wipes) and vacuums at least once a week. Recently removed all carpets except for living room and bedroom (I didn't want to get rid of these since I just bought them before she moved in and they were somewhat expensive). Also paid a good $400 to have the air ducts cleaned out over the summer.
It did get a little better with the Germ Guardian, but she still gets runny noses at night and it drives both of us nuts with her having to blow her nose every hour or two.
