Welcome! I bought this book when I was interested in learning more and I've really enjoyed it. Some of the things in it are a little outdated, but it's still a really helpful guide (and it looks like you can get used copies for $0.01!)

Ice Hockey Made Simple, A Spectator's Guide

TIL: nobody knows anything about Bettmans job, what he's done to the league, and how the lockouts are not his fault, but the owners.

To anyone that, like me, has a passion for the game and the NHL, I recommend this book:

The Instigator: How Gary Bettman Remade the League and Changed the Game Forever

http://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/0670065927#

This book has given me an entirely different perspective towards the NHL and Gary Bettman, and turned me from a blind, uneducated Bettman hater, to someone that really doesn't mind him.

Seriously, read this book. It's awesome.

Oh man, there are so many dimensions to fights I'm not sure where to start.

It's everything from intimidation, to players themselves policing the games. As funny as it sounds - fights actually ensure safer games and lesser injuries. How? If you know the 1.90m. 100kg. enforcer is on the ice, you will think twice about making a bad check or roughing up the star player that "goon" was put on the ice to protect.

Another important aspect is momentum and flow. If your team is down, if the fans are not really in the game and not giving that extra edge and push to their team, a fight actually riles up the whole building and sometimes even contributes to changing the pace up for your team and getting them all fired up and hungry.

There is actually a lot going on behind the scenes which casual observers of the game do not understand or notice about the fights. There is an unwritten "code" between all the enforcers and baring some very intense rivalries, most of them actually look out for one another and while the main purpose of a fight is to rough up the opposing fighter, it is never to injure them. There are tonnes of respect between enforcers and they know that for them, its just a job and its never personal, it's all about honor - your teams and your own.

In short - yes, the game (NHL Specifically) would change drastically if fights were outright banned as they are in, lets say, the Olympics.

This is a very interesting aspect of the sport and I could go on and on, but I would rather give you a straight up answer and highly recommend this book if you have further interest in researching the subject.

An interesting book I read tried to figure this out for all major sports. The argument they made was (iirc) the largest impact on home field/ice advantage is how the home team's fans affect the judgement of the referees. And the largest impact is on the calls that are largely subjective (e.g. was that "holding" or not). They also spent considerable time trying to refute other ideas (e.g. travel issues, knowledge of ones own field/rink, fans boosting confidence/energy of players, a few others). Some data the book provides:

  • In the NHL, home teams get 20 percent fewer penalties and receive fewer minutes per penalty. "On average, home teams get two and a half more minutes of power play opportunities ... than away teams. That is a huge advantage." If you multiply that by a 20 percent success rate, you get an extra 0.25 goals per game for the home team. Since the average overall differential is only 0.3 goals for the home team, "this alone accounts for more than 80 percent of the home ice advantage in hockey."

  • There is no apparent [home ice advantage] in shootouts, where refereeing makes no difference

I wouldn't go so far as to say the authors figured it all out, but they made some interesting observations.

I'm a chick but I loved it when someone gave me a copy of Ken Dryden's book The Game

He isn't doing it out of spite. He is employed by the owners. The owners want to grow the sport in the US because there is a lot more to be gained there than in Canada. Most Canadians already watch and follow hockey, there isn't nearly as much potential for growth of league revenue as there would be for a new US market.

I don't like it, but it's the reality. Part of his job is to deflect and be a scapegoat for the owners, and they pay him handsomely for it.

I recommend this book. It didn't make me like Bettman by any stretch, but it certainly helped me understand what his role is in all this: http://www.amazon.ca/The-Instigator-Bettman-Changed-Forever/dp/0670065927

Brett Heart sharpshooting a cow. Excellent. On a side note, you should read his book - http://www.amazon.com/Hitman-Real-Cartoon-World-Wrestling/dp/0446545287 It will blow your mind just how big of a piece of shit wrestlers are.

Obviously, you don't understand basic grammar.

"the rules surrounding the plural form of proper nouns (two Maple Leaf players are Maple Leafs for the same reason that Julia Child and family are the Childs and not the Children"

Here's a book that might help you understand

They have it on Amazon and it says it'll ship there. However it says it only comes out on July 26. I can't seem to find any in the UK as of right now, but I'll keep looking and let you know if I do.

Does she have a Blue ray player?

Really?

So explain to me why James Dolan, owner of the Rangers who spoke out against the lockout.....stepped into the company line days after. Bettman runs the Board of Governors, no matter what you seem to think. Yes, owners vote and there is an executive committee, but HE ONLY NEEDS 8 VOTES TO SQUASH OR DO ANYTHING. He runs the show. Show me some facts otherwise to be taken seriously, or continue insulting, downvoting, and arguing in a circle by saying get my facts straight.

And if you want to talk about facts, link some articles. It's simple:
