Plus one for violent python! Blackhat python is a similar book to violent python too that seems good.

If you're coming from a compsci background or have some C knowledge then "Hacking: The art of Exploitation" is a really good one. I found it pretty hard going not knowing absolutely anything, but revisiting it with what I know now, it really does cover a lot of great topics in really good detail. It's really good at explaining the why of things too, whereas a lot of other materials focus on the how it's done only.

Also, I was wondering to which extend should we focus on

. Network (do we need to study the entire CCNA syllabus for example, or only basic routing, DNS, TCP/IP)

. Linux (do we need to study the entire LPIC syllabus or should we focus mainly on for eg; BASH, SED, AWK, etc and all command found in sbin...)

.Windows( Do we need to study entire tools used for Windows servers Powershell, WORKGROUP, AD, GPO, ADSI EDITOR,...)

I want to at least tackle a workbook on the Linux command line, review networking protocols and such, and work through Georgia Weidman's Penetration Testing: A Hands-On Introduction to Hacking, otherwise I fear I'd be throwing money down the drain with lab access.

Are there prerequisite certifications and/or pre-OSCP hands-on training materials that this sub recommends for noobs like me? :-)

The biggest thing is the material they provide. The Red team field manual RTFM helped a ton early on.

Cant get any easier than this.

For your specific situation I would highly recommend purchasing Georgia Weidman's book and working through it with a new kali.
You will learn an inordinate amount simply from fixing the broken packages and commands. Aside from this the exercises are very similar to the lab material.
