Sets come in various sizes, but you probably want a selection of knives with more small heads than large ones. The different shapes can be helpful for avoiding solder points and small electronic bits on the mobo.
As for getting through the glue, like ayunatsume, I didn't use a heat gun. I did use an ordinary hair dryer (just let it blow on the lid for 5 minutes) and held the blade in a candle flame before each cut, but I can't really say either was effective. Some people recommend running the PS3 for 20-30 minutes first so that the hot chips themselves soften the glue (I suppose you could half-disassemble it or something).
Finding the exact gap for the glue is definitely tricky, but once you start, you'll zero in on it each time. Search on "delid ps3" on YouTube for videos. Definitely watch a few to get multiple perspectives.
ayunatsume has excellent useful ideas. Thread (or fishing line, perhaps) to cut the lid glue is very interesting! And adding pressure to the clamps with bits of popsicle stick is like the penny or copper shim technique (some people say using copper helps with heat dispersion).
This has probably been answered but I can't seem to find it. I have one of the first gen PS3s with the PS2 hardware emulation, CECHA01 model. It's got CFW on it but I haven't touched it since right after Thanksgiving 2017 when it became exploitable.
Say I wanted to upgrade the 60 GB drive to something a little more comfortable, like a 1TB. (1TB is still the limit, right?) I need to aim for 2.5" and under 9mm tall? Or is it 9.5mm or under? Will a WD Black work, or should I aim for a Seagate?

the problem you encounter is becuase the ps3 canrt boot properly. (I am also asuming you downloaded the cex to dex from overflow cfw, i did this myself)
here is a quick tutorial on how to fix the problem. DO EVERYTHING OR IT WILL NOT WORK!!!!!
Now head over to your ps3.
When the ps3 boots up the things should be fixed. you will lose the games downloaded onto your ps3 but you can easily redownload then.

I've had the best luck with 3tb Seagate Expansion drives.
I have 3 of these connected up to my PS3. All my games are in ISO format and the drives formatted to NTFS. When they were fat32 they take forever to load the game list etc.
btw when I was testing only 64k clusters worked with fat32.
My drives are all mbr primary single partion. They both worked fat32 and ntfs. NTFS just preformed better. Multiman cannot read 3tb ntfs drives though. Iris based managers have no problem though.
If I'm remembering correctly from my hard drive hunt a little over a year ago, the maximum size of hard drive you can install on a PS3 is 1.5TB. For some reason the 2TB hard drives don't work. You need something that is 9.5mm or thinner as well. This is a good option for the 1TB (which is what I went with) and this is a good option for the 1.5TB. And seeing as how the 1.5TB is only $7 more expensive.....
