It will not pop as well as if you had it the other side down. There is a special pad that absorbs the microwaves, heats up, and evenly distributes the heat to the oil, butter, and popcorn mixture. It makes the process more efficient.
Found a bit in Wikipedia:

He can test water quality with something like this. It uses electric pulse to test what percentage of the water isn't actually water molecules, meaning it's something else (like inorganic elements).

There are plenty of magnetic levitation toys available that use magnets to float. I'm not sure if that's the same as "putting a piece of metal on the roof" as you are asking.
