Depends if you're working the yard or on the road.

I have https://www.redoxx.com/railroad-grip/91003/product Kinda expensive but you can't beat the quality. Plus they have life time warranty. This thing is seriously tough.

You'll want a set of rain gear, again it depends if you're on the road or the yard on how good a quality you need I was on the road for 5 years and a cheap pair of frogtoggs were more than adequate. Now i'm in the yard I brought some more substantial rain gear.

Some guys get carried away with taking everything to the hotel. I just took a small roller suitcase 20" by about 15" with change of clothes, Ipad, wash kit, pair of sneakers if i was going to a hotel with a gym. Depending on your budget you might wanna take enough food for two days as well. It was getting to the point i was spending so much money at gas stations, sandwich here, piece of pizza there soon adds up. No need to take water, NS will supply all that.

With winter coming a good set of insulated gloves. https://www.amazon.com/Carhartt-Insulated-Grain-Leather-Safety/dp/B005I34H8A/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1537356403&sr=8-6&keywords=carhartt+thinsulate+gloves Is one of the best pairs I've found for winter. I've worked in temperature down to -40 with the wind chill and my hands have never been cold.

You might see if you can get a copy of this book from the library: https://www.amazon.com/Railroad-What-Does-Introduction-Railroading/dp/0911382585/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_14_t_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=75DWX1ZKQKX2KE46GGSP

BNSF has a "Railroad 101" training course for employees in support departments that covers the basics of railroad operations and service concepts. This is the book they use for that course.

If you can find a copy, you might also read the book Hunter Harrison wrote about PSR while he was at CN. I don't agree with the model, but since it's the hot thing in railroading right now, it's good to have an idea of what proponents of PSR claim that it is. If you can't find the book, CP published a white paper that summarizes the basic concepts which is available online.

I can’t recommend one insole over another. I don’t think I ever had a problem with the ones that come in any boots. I am currently rocking these and don’t have any problems so far at about 4 months of use: Dr Scholl’s

If you check the post you replied to, I added a link with some boot recommendations. My current pair are the Ariat Conquest GTX Square Hunting Boots. I’ve always favored 8” boots. If you know you don’t need waterproof boots, I’m more than likely going to buy the Thorogood Saw military boots next year. Super lights are niiiiice, this is the first pair I’ve seen that has a legal heel.

I have this Invicta quartz movement http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HFALPOS but I am an engineer. If I were a Conductor, I might consider something that lit up so I that I could check the time when I wrote down the signals.
