THIS is the type of track he's talking about. And THESE are what the flexible ice scratchers look like. These ones allow you to drive in reverse without having to put them up. The other style look like THIS. Driving backwards with them will break them as they are stiff.

You should also take the sled to your dealer so they can check the clutch spring and weights to make sure they are suitable for riding around your area. Typically the elevation range for the clutch weights and springs you would need for your area is 0-5000 feet. With the sled at the dealer they can also hook the sled up to their computer to run a diagnostic to ensure everything is working properly.

The price for the smaller lug track is roughly 600-900 depending on where you can get it. I know that in the group I ride with a couple people have the 155 RMKs and the 2 inch lug track and they do just fine on the trail. One thing to remember however is that because the TUNNEL of the sled is longer there is more you need to keep cool. The cooling system runs under it and the snow being thrown up at it works to cool the sled. So what you can do is every so often go to the edge of the trail where the groomer pushed snow up and drive about 40 feet in it. The loose snow will be thrown easier to cool the sled. Your ice scratchers also do this but sometimes the sled gets hot anyways. It is always a good idea to keep the temperature gauge up on a mountain sled when riding it on the trail.

No problem. I thought of a couple of other items (that you can never have 'too much' of) in the Safety category:

An Avalanche/rescue shovel: the BCA Dozer is my favorite. Has a saw in the handle and is $90.
An Avalanche Probe: The BCA Stealth 300 is a great deal at $70.
Fire Starters: Something like these with a pack of waterproof matches are VERY helpful in the winter.

In the end, you usually end up in one of these categories. If you haven't found something that strikes your fancy, look at the vendors for these categories and you'll find something:

  • Parts: BackCountry Access, Sled Solutions, and Skinz Protective Gear make a ton of "universal fit" stuff.

  • Apparel: Major Brands are Klim, FXR, Motorfist and 509

  • Safety: BCA again, along with PIEPS, Snowpulse, and ABS. Otherwise any wintertime survival stuff from REI or any sporting goods store can apply.

Last winter was ridiculously cold so I tried to find the best gloves this year. I came to the conclusion that you need at least 2 pairs (maybe three) for the varying conditions.

For the super cold days I settled on Black Diamond Soloist finger gloves. I also bought a case Hot Hands for when the conditions change on the trail.

I used this tow my dad’s Switchback with my Viper. He stayed on the sled to operate the brake. Had to stop a couple of times to cool down but otherwise worked great!

My dad has one of these Warn battery portable winches. He likes to get himself in some crazy places alone for some reason, so he keeps this strapped down to the back of his tunnel. I've never seen him use it yet being I'll shovel him out when we go together, but he claims it's saved him a few times.

I cannot recommend these enough. I can ride without ANY gloves in 0 degrees with these things (provided your handlebar warmers work)

There's a video of a snocross rider getting a snowmobile dropped on him over a jump...he survived. He was wearing a Tekvest. Again - not going to stop everything - nothing does - but definitely stands up to punishment.
