You're welcome. I'd have added more but, as you may have noticed, I hit the comment character limit.

By the way, the 360 dongle doesn't cost as much as the steam controller. I have this one, it's $14 atm.

If you do decide on the steam controller, Amazon has it with the carry case for the same price as they have the controller by itself. Here.

Also, adding on about the controller, at this point I've had two other people (who don't play a lot of games) try the controller and they picked it up easily. It seems like the biggest issue people have is unlearning other controllers, rather than learning the new one.

It's also possible that part of it is the fact that trackball emulation is the best way (imo) to control the camera via the controller. One of the two people, the one who picked it up easier, regularly uses a trackball to play games already and was used to the way it responded. In fact, I used a trackball to play games for a long time as well. Maybe that's part of why some people learn to use it easier than others. I'm not sure, I'm rambling anyway. The point is that it takes a bit of effort to unlearn how you play with other controllers.

I'd love to know what you decide though. The steam controller is superior, in my opinion, except for the lack of a physical d-pad. That's just about the only downside and I can make do with that since I don't play a lot of platformers and the radial menus make waaaay better quick selects.

u/jmdbcool · 1 pointr/Steam

I own both and I recommend the 360 dongle. I probably haven't invested enough time/knowledge into the Steam controller. But that's the thing, you have to spend some time learning to use it to really get the benefits of it.

I also have four 360 controllers, which all work with the dongle. I mainly use it for single player, but when friends are over it's so nice to quickly put on something with local multiplayer like Rocket League or Towerfall and it all works perfectly. If you have more than one 360 controller, big bonus there.

The official Microsoft one is about $20: https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Receiver-Windows/dp/B000HZFCT2

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Guacamelee! Gold Edition. It's an excellent luchador-themed Metroidvania game that's super fun solo or duo. It's best played with a controller/gamepad, so you will want either a wired controller or a wireless receiver so you can use your 360 controllers.

u/meeme109 · 10 pointsr/Steam

The wired xbox 360 controller is probably your best bet right now. It's the most popular and the most well supported in games, as well as being well designed. Unless you want to wait for valve's own controller to come out, I'd recommend that.

u/NimbusBear · 30 pointsr/Steam

It is very important that everyone knows that...

u/Crashboy96 · 2 pointsr/Steam

I definitely recommend using Wireless Xbox One controllers along with this. I use it constantly, it's fantastic for gaming on the couch with multiple people as we don't have to deal with wires. Probably the best $25 I've spent in a while.

u/zeug666 · 3 pointsr/Steam

> I have a wireless controller but I plugged it in w the Plug and Play USB cable that charges it.

The Play n Charge cable carries ONLY power to charge the controller batteries. No data.

> Do I need something else?

Yes, the Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows will allow you to connect the wireless controller to your PC. Please note that there is a different version for the Xbox One wireless controller and that the two are not compatible (360 controller doesn't work on Xbone adapter, Xbone controller doesn't work on 360 adapter). Or a wired version of either controller, which you just plug and play.

u/juaquin · 3 pointsr/Steam

I haven't tried the Steam version of GTA4, but yeah, when I played the PC version in the past it was completely painless. The 360 controller is supported by default: http://support.rockstargames.com/entries/479429-currently-supported-controllers-for-gta-iv-pc

You'd need something like this if you don't already have a controller. It contains both the controller and the USB wireless adapter. You can also get a normal wired one but for the small price difference, I would go wireless. Just personal preference.

u/radbrad7 · 2 pointsr/Steam

Buy Civilization IV and Civilization V on Amazon for $11.99. You can activate Civilization V on Steam but IV you cannot, you just have to download IV straight to your computer. Your welcome :)

u/ikemoto · 3 pointsr/Steam

I don't think you need too, but i would recommend playing the first one as it is a very good game. If you have not played either of them here is a link to an amazon sale for the Bioshock 1 & 2 bundle for $7.49 that activates on steam. Click Me Please

u/-woodhouse- · 1 pointr/Steam

Wireless should be fine for singleplayer. You may still experience rare freezes and stuttering but overall it's ok (at least when I tried it). If you can afford to spend a little money I would recommend buying powerline network adapter. I bought this one off Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-PA4010KIT-Powerline-Adapter-Starter/dp/B00AWRUICG/
(I am not saying it's the best but I have 0 issues with it). This is what I am using with steam link. It works MUCH better than with wifi. Absolutely no complaints.

u/Zero2891 · 2 pointsr/Steam

Wait, you can get it cheaper on amazon
http://www.amazon.com/Square-Enix-41017Tomb-Raider2-Download/dp/B007VFHGZ4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1373767974&sr=8-3&keywords=tomb+raider
Use the code: GOONCAVE and you will pay 10 dollars for Tomb Raider, you can activate it on Steam. And yes, its worth it, i loved the game

u/zer0t3ch · 1 pointr/Steam

Also, get one of these if you're going to be playing a lot of games with controller support. It's a great investment, especially if you already have the controllers. Since you're on linux, if you don't have it already, you'll probably need xboxdrv to make it work correctly.

u/[deleted] · 5 pointsr/Steam

At first I was confused by your comment... then I saw Amazon has already started theirs. And wow many of them are pretty good already:

I'm almost about the buy the Firaxis one ONLY for Xcom.... I already own both Civ's.

I wish they would just offer the option for Xcom but right now it's $40 individually? At least with Steam they usually discount the individual games too with the bundles...

u/EsquireSandwich · 2 pointsr/Steam

https://www.amazon.com/Steam-Controller/dp/B01MQ5NK5Y/ref=sr_1_3?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1482424606&sr=1-3&keywords=steam%2Bcontroller&th=1

Buy the link for $19.99 and this controller plus case package for 34.99 (the controller without case is also $34.99 so no reason not to get it). $55 for both is, i think a tiny bit more expensive than the steam bundle, but Amazon Prime makes up for it in shipping, plus a free case.

u/Zakic · 2 pointsr/Steam

Just a side note.. you can also get them from amazon.. and if you have amazon prime you get free 2 day shipping on it..

Link

If you buy it on amazon you also get the case for free.. (going though steam the bundle cost about 80 cents more)

I actually bought the bundle off amazon yesterday.. the case showed up today and the controller will be here tomorrow

u/shawn789 · 2 pointsr/Steam

You need a wireless adapter for your controller. This is the one I use. Plug it into a USB 2.0 port and let Windows install the drivers. Then sync your controller with the adapter. There's tutorials all over the Internet for this.

If you go to the store page for a game it will say so in the right column with the other categories the game is in. Also, if you're using a controller, you'll be doing yourself a big favor by using Big Picture mode. You can control it with your controller and every game will have a controller icon or keyboard icon denoting whether it's compatible with a controller it just a keyboard and mouse. It will also warn you if you try starting a game that is only compatible with keyboard/mouse. The icons aren't always completely accurate; sometimes it will say games aren't controller compatible when they are. This usually happens when a game can accept controller input normally but only has prompts for keyboard/mouse input. Games that only have partial controller support will also show up as only keyboard/mouse.

u/ZeSexyPanda · 1 pointr/Steam

it' 10% off on amazon right now. At most it will be discounted to 33% on steam if it ever goes on sale. If you really want to play just get it from amazon

u/SEJIBAQUI · 1 pointr/Steam

I use one of my old 360 controllers with this dongle. It works really well, not much input lag that I can pickup. I've gotten years of mileage out of the thing; however, my controller itself could probably use replacing since the thumbsticks tend to drift after so many years. The only issues with using the wireless dongle are powering the controller (AA batteries or a recharge pack), and playing games that require frame-perfect inputs (so pretty much just fighting games).

I can't say anything about the steam controller, though.

u/Chainunlimit · 2 pointsr/Steam

Same goes for a Civ 5+Civ 4 Bundle. I believe Civ 4 also comes with DLC. Here it is. Great deal if you ask me.

u/idkwtfiad · 7 pointsr/Steam

Amazon does not appear to have any Steam Links of their own in stock, at least on the US Amazon site. All Steam Links for sale are from third parties.

u/Dark_Pinoy · 1 pointr/Steam

Bioshock 1 and 2 Dual Pack $7.49

Borderlands Game of the Year Edition $7.49

Both of these deals are on Amazon and both can be activated on Steam when bought :)

u/Tolham · 2 pointsr/Steam

here's the link. it says 1&2 are a online game code and infinite is a download. would infinite activate on steam or would i have to just add it as a non-steam game?

update: i bought the pack. it adds all 3 games to your amazon game library. you can either download the game from amazon, or activate it on steam with the product code. i just activated infinite on steam and it's downloading the game like any other game that you buy from steam.

u/curbstickle · 0 pointsr/Steam

Bioshock Dual Pack, 1 & 2, on Amazon for $7.49

Make sure to select Steam for your DRM option, and redeem in Steam.

This sale at Amazon lasts all of July.

u/mattbones · 2 pointsr/Steam

I like using my 360 wireless. they dont make an adapter so i had to buy a third party one on amazon http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Pc-Gaming-Receiver-Xbox-xbox360/dp/B0076HD2W8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1417024630&sr=8-2&keywords=xbox+360+wireless+adapter

Ps3 ones work well with a driver ( its on the steam forums somewhere)
I tried using the ps4 one briefly but it wouldnt map the buttons correctly when playing some games. I have american hands so the cramping was the most tolerable on 360 ( ps4 close runner up but its still not as comfortable longevity wise)

u/DESTROYER_OF_RECTUMS · 7 pointsr/Steam

Im in NZ and I brought it from Amazon here a couple weeks after the US release.

Hope this helps OP.

u/LeetModule · 14 pointsr/Steam

I am using a DS4 controller with a Bluetooth adapter. Works really well and I don't need to worry about a wire while gaming in bed! You can also get a wireless 360 controller and the dongle so you're able to use it.

u/ece_guy · 2 pointsr/Steam

I would recommend you to go with Crusader Kings 2 instead of Victoria 2 if you don't have it already. Or, you could get one of these Paradox packs from Amazon right now. 1 2

u/wasniahC · 1 pointr/Steam

I guess I'll buy from 60% rating fuelforairplanes for £60 if I want a new one

God damnit.. I guess I should check amazon more often, though.

u/Yvese · 3 pointsr/Steam

PSA: The Samsung Odyssey+ is currently $229 on Amazon.

You do not need an Index to play HL:Alyx.

u/Keinichn · 2 pointsr/Steam

Keep in mind that 100% of the time, wireless is going to have less throughput (considerably, the majority of the time). This is definitely going to impact the quality and latency that you get. You may want to look into an AC Ethernet adapter. It'll get you a wired connection without having to run a cable all the way around the house.

u/david_Iie · 1 pointr/Steam

Steam don't currently sell on the Australia store. It's annoying that it shows up in our featured area on the main steam store page.

The good news is, you can get them from Amazon at the same price - and they will ship them here. I got one, and a controller delivered in December.

Edit: worth adding it comes with universal power adapters, and not one that takes up crazy amounts of space. It is actually a really neat adapter/plug.

u/arachnophilia · 5 pointsr/Steam

huh, would you look at that. it's already on a better sale.

i'm really starting to think that all our choices here are irrelevant.

u/wudmtmd · 1 pointr/Steam

It will most likely. Ordering now won't give you any discounts. Only official channel is Steam Store and anywhere is middle man adding their costs or profit to $50 like (pay attention to shipment fees) and won't do Steam Store discount ratios.

u/Lazy_McLazington · 5 pointsr/Steam

Good thing the Odyssey+ is $250 right now

u/Shift-1 · 1 pointr/Steam

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004QRKWLA

Just bought one of these myself. Plug and play. No extra software like MotionInJoy necessary.

u/1mikeg · 5 pointsr/Steam

Just FYI - the controller and adapter are about $45 still.

u/mpheus · 5 pointsr/Steam

Just FYI, keep your eyes on Amazon sales too. They have 2k Strategy Pack with Civ 4 complete, Civ 5 GOTY and Stronghold Collection for $19.99. Bioshock 1&2 pack is for $7.5 (I don't think steam can go lower with this). Both of these packs can be activated on Steam.

u/StudCupcake · 2 pointsr/Steam

If the game has local co-op. You can either connect with a usb cord, or buy a receiver http://www.amazon.ca/Xbox-360-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver/dp/B000HZFCT2. I play local co-op games with my brothers all the time

Also use this site to figure out which games are local co-op http://www.co-optimus.com/

u/FallenWyvern · 2 pointsr/Steam

I bought one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows/dp/B000HZFCT2

about two years ago. They're fantastic. You can connect up to 4 controllers, each with accessories (except the typing pad, that doesn't work, but headsets do) all in one usb port. Also win7/8 has the drivers for it built in, so no need to install anything.

u/movieguy2121 · 4 pointsr/Steam

The offer is still available, just check under other sellers and makes sure to order the one from Amazon.com.

u/emalk4y · 2 pointsr/Steam

The legitimate Microsoft-built Wireless adapter (Also on Amazon, here) is one dollar more expensive. Why not get that instead?

u/Laetteralus · 8 pointsr/Steam

Bioshock Franchise Pack -Amazon

Redeems on Steam can't get any lower.

u/gnychis · 2 pointsr/Steam

I still don't own it either. I'm wondering if I should pull the trigger on $7.49 sale on Amazon (activates on Steam) which includes both Bioshock 1 and 2

u/jimmy_bish · 0 pointsr/Steam

Mine was directly from Amazon. The seller info is "Amazon.com LLC".

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B016KBVBCS/

u/Hudbus · 1 pointr/Steam

No.

Ethernet would have to be plugged into both in order to be stable.

A Powerline Adapter will allow you to connect devices via ethernet anywhere there's a power outlet on the same circuit. They run about $40, but with the link on sale, you may as well go for it.

Also, don't get the link through Steam. I've seen enough complaints about long shipping and possible delivery miscommunication to not order hardware directly from them. Amazon currently has the same sale price though.

u/marpe · 1 pointr/Steam

If it's a wireless controller, you will need a Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver. The play and charge kit only charges the batteries, it doesn't transfer any data between the controller and the PC.

u/Arik_De_Frasia · 2 pointsr/Steam

Why? You already have a controller, why not just get the adapter for cheaper?

Right now Tomb raider is cheaper on amazon ($17.49) which gives you a steam code to redeem. I'm going to wait to see if it hits 66 or 75% myself.

u/AZ929 · 1 pointr/Steam

Quantum Conundrum is already on sale on amazon.

u/ImDeadInside · 1 pointr/Steam

if you're after the triple pack then it's on sale at Amazon for $11.99

Tons of stuff is on sale at the moment, including the Steam Controller.

They are sold physicaly and online at EBgames stores for 60$ CAD

u/PanicHouse · 2 pointsr/Steam

So is the

u/RealNoNamer · 1 pointr/Steam

As far as I can tell, not unless you want to shell out $150CAD on Amazon

Seems to be correct.

u/lastonearound · 2 pointsr/Steam

Thank you but even one of those budget options is way too costly for me. My countries currency isn't worth much, so I could either get a cheap VR set or pay my rent for around 6 months..

I really wanted to buy this:
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-Wireless-Controllers-XE800ZBA-HC1US/dp/B07HS7R1RT/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Samsung+Odyssey%2B&qid=1574368990&s=electronics&sr=1-1

And it is cheaper now, but I just can't afford it.

u/CarUnShe · 6 pointsr/Steam

No, those cables only charge the controller, they don't have any data transfer capabilities. You can use this if you want to use your current Xbox controller for pc.

u/darkstar3333 · 1 pointr/Steam

No. PC gaming is about choice, if you want a controller go out and get one.

Realistically speaking you might see a Steam controller available in 12-18 months. They are still testing them and its likely the first batch will only be available online in limited quantities.

360/PS3 controllers will start to get really really cheap so retailers can move them such as this:

http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Controller-Windows/dp/B004QRKWKQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1382496629&sr=8-2&keywords=xbox+360+for+pc

$40 includes a dongle & wireless controller. You can connect up to 4 controllers per dongle. Don't buy the two components separately.

u/EpicWolverine · 2 pointsr/Steam

Conveniently, the Steam Controller and Case are on sale on Amazon right now. Not only is it at its usual low of $35, but the bundle with the case currently costs the same price as the controller alone.

u/smthngclvr · 2 pointsr/Steam

http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Controller-Windows/dp/B004QRKWKQ/

Do you know if this includes the wireless adapter? The description was kind of unclear.

u/Infininja · 0 pointsr/Steam

> They are 3rd party adapters.

I'm not even arguing against this.

> And they are also the only ones in production right now

I wouldn't know. I don't have an eye into Microsoft's or most everyone else's productions.

> they are the only thing you can buy.

Absolutely untrue. Even if it were true, it would have no bearing on the knockoff status of ones in production.

> Stop claiming you can be racist and polite, that is impossible.

Stop putting words in people's mouths; it's impolite.

u/whyyouarewrong84 · 2 pointsr/Steam

Easy to do when microsoft still sells them: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Wired-Controller-Windows-Console/dp/B004QRKWLA

The only risk on amazon is if some shitty 3rd party using amazon as a warehouse slips in fake ones, but amazon will quickly blacklist such a seller and give you a refund or replace it with a real one. That risk is generally quite low since the first person who ends up with a fake is going to report it and inventory will be checked.
