Not much is taken from the novels - particularly from the Destiny trilogy onwards - but some elements are used to fill in some blanks (the Andorians having four sexes for example). If some Enterprise-era stuff makes it ingame, I'd like to see the events of The Good That Men Do respected. I don't know enough about the other series' books to really judge whether or not I'd like to see them included (though I've heard good things about the DS9 relaunch).

Huh, looks like they might be. I found where I've bought them in my order history, and the page now says they're Unavailable. I imagine they aren't being produced anymore, so supply had to dry up eventually. I also think they may have only been offered by one 3rd party seller, since all the ones I got were from the same seller (Lotsa Electronics). I sent them a message asking what's up.

A sealed retail box copy is your next best bet. Less bang-for-your-buck most of the time, but sometimes you'll snag a preorder bonus, like the TR-116A.

You're welcome! I've never been much of a gamer, so I've never played this game myself. But a couple of years ago I got The Needs Of The Many novel, and really enjoyed it. And I read up on the premise of the game. It's a really great Star Trek future.

> The same way that buying a lotto ticket this week doesn't increase my odds of winning next weeks draw if I don't win.

no, but buying multiple tickets this week increses your chance to win this week

> You would be correct if you could use multiple keys on one box to increase your odds of getting a ship, but thats not how it work.

yes, i am also correct if i can use multiple keys on multiple boxes

> You only get to buy 1 ticket to this weeks lotto, one for next weeks etc etc

not really, you can buy as many tickets as you can afford

i suggest https://www.amazon.com/Probability-Dummies-Deborah-J-Rumsey/dp/0471751413/ unless you want to make fool out of yourself some more...

Although it's not meant for PvP, this guide might be of some use. Aaaand here's another Escort guide that was recently posted. The Fleet Escort should be great for tanking (as far as escorts go), so the problem may be your BOff skills? You'll definitely need Hazard Emitters, EPtS, Reverse Shield Polarity, and Tactical Team. Make sure you're using a Subspace Field Modulator. Consider picking up the Collector's Edition for the Red Matter Capacitor and Borg BOffs, or the Thunderchild for the Point Defense Console, or the Gladius for the Impulse Capacitance Console. Also, in combat, jam the up arrow key to be sure your forward shields are strongest.

I don't have any PvP experience but hopefully this helps at least a little. :D

First, don't bother with the lockboxes. Just discard them. The thrill of the gamble quickly wears off when the only thing you get are a few Lobi crystals and NPC-vendor trash.

Now, I can't think of any way to transfer Zen from an account to another. And it makes sense, since it would make it easy for the gold-farmers. Some of the C-Store items are tradable though, but not the ships if that's what you wanted to give him.

Only solution I see here is buying subscription cards on Amazon. Each card gives 2 months of subscription. Each month of subscription gives 500 zen. That's going to cost more than just buying the zen, even more so if you want him to get a ship (~3000zen). But I don't see many other options.

Be also wary that there's a limit of 10 million EC for standard accounts, and this limit with be temporally lifted during the subscription, but come back after it ends. So if you want to keep the EC Cap limit (and you should) you'll have to buy it from the C-Store for 500 zen. If there's only one thing you have to get from the C-Store, it's that one.

Ah, good to know, thanks. :)

EDIT: Just to clarify, we're talking about this, right?

Andrew Robinson loved playing Garak so much, he wrote a novel to give the character more backstory. I'm sure they could get him if they wanted to. He could probably give them some story advice, too.

u/Heroine4Life · 1 pointr/sto

Oh wow. I was just looking at that. Does anyone else do this? It seems cheaper then do an active account as that is about 12-15$ / month and this is 7.50

-edit-

related, what do you get for buying the game?

u/DarraignTheSane · 2 pointsr/sto

Link for the lazy.

It's well worth it once you factor in the 1000 zen you'll get for the stipend, as well as the 4-5 retrain tokens you earn from leveling a character while subbed that otherwise cost 500 zen/piece.

u/HamsterChieftain · 5 pointsr/sto

Note that if you're in the US, a 60-day subscription card costs $15 at Amazon. This gives you the account bank permanently, unlocks an extra character slot, and eventually gives you 1000 zen before it expires. It has other nice features as well.

(This) should do the trick, it seems to sound like it's all original Barry Gray.

u/thinkreate · 2 pointsr/sto

While it would be nice if the did, they don't have to. There's a CD you can buy, called, "This One's From The Heart," that has most of the DS9 songs, as sung by James Darren. All they need to do is get the rights to the album to make that work.

You might want to look up one of those "vertical" mice. I've had more and more problems with the wrist of my mouse hand aching more and more over the years. I got myself one of these Logitech MX Vertical mice a few weeks ago and man, it has done the trick. Pricey, but man, it has helped so much. Aching; Gone.

It took a few weeks to really get used to it, but it's worked incredibly well.
The only real quibbles I have with it are weirdly placed forward/back buttons, the price (which is a tad high) and the fact I keep knocking it all the time when I move my hand over my desk for something without thinking.

Also, obligatory "A controller? Ewww!"
Though in all seriousness, you'd be seriously hamstringing yourself with a controller in STO.

EDIT

Just noting what worked for me. Your mileage may vary.

There was a set up novel at launch.

https://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Online-Needs-Many/dp/150113017X

It was written by the same guy as the Romulan War novel series. That’s the only official released media I’m aware of other than the game itself. YouTube videos would be another avenue.

u/Lord-Ice · 2 pointsr/sto

There's only one, The Needs of the Many. Most of its contents have been negated by STO's story as it developed (the book was released around the time of launch, so it's not as if the devs or the author knew what was going to happen). However, it is still a decent read. It's a series of tales told in an interview format, with Jake Sisko being the interviewer. There's a MACO in the first interview that mentions MACOs using TR-116s, but that got retconned by Cryptic's lack of common sense regarding Borg adaptation Cryptic's choice to use a Compression Phaser Rifle as the MACO Sniper Rifle. I still call my TR-116B my T-Rex because of that segment.

Scot also mentioned wanting to get his hands on an Eaglemoss book which more than likely is Star Trek: The U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 Illustrated Handbook for drawings of the DSC versions of the ship's interior. This Trek Collective article has the entire DSC chapter, including a drawing of the bridge. I'm probably wrong, but this probably the first official Fact File-style images since the Fact Files stopped years ago.

The comics actually did a Khan series that takes place before Into Darkness, and gives a pretty decent explanation for why Khan looks different. In a nutshell, after the Nero incident, they decided to be more pro-active and look for threats before they showed up at Earth. While out scouting, they found the Botany Bay, and realized they had found Khan and crew. Marcus wanted to use Khan as a weapon against the Klingons, but knew he would be too dangerous unless they had some kind of control over him. So they decided to wipe his memory and surgically alter his appearance so he wouldnt recognize himself and remember who he was. It worked for a while and he worked as an undercover agent carrying out all kind of operations that a normal human couldnt, but eventually his memory came back and he wanted revenge. Of course all of that wasnt explained in the movie, so I understand not liking what we saw. But the story as explained in the comics is much better.

The full story is here if anyone is interested:

That was, if memory serves, part of what led to Galactica.

That said, they've started releasing battle damaged merch over the past few years:

http://www.amazon.com/Diamond-Select-Electronic-Damaged-Enterprise/dp/B00FRLVP92

http://www.amazon.com/Hot-Wheels-Damaged-Enterprise-NCC-1701-D/dp/B002I9Z73Q

http://www.diamondselecttoys.com/star-trek--ships--star-trek-battle-damaged-enterprise-e

If you modeled the damage to be "inspired by" the damage of specific battles, you might have a case. It might be tricky the way the game uses hulls.
