OneNote: life. The paper options (lined/graph) and math functions are awesome. Office is really down priced for students so I highly recommend getting all of the office 2016 programs anyway. Windows Hello is great for me since I need to sign in fast, but turning it off is supposed to increase battery life, so whatever is most important to you. screenshots and DrawboardPDF are must Know-hows.
For the actual device, I got a skin on mine that I would def recommend to prevent scratching, and a sleeve that opens vertically so I can grab it from my backpack quickly.

I'm an engineering student with mine and I have the Kensington Black Belt case for it. Keeps it safe from all the scuffs from the machinery and drops from tables.

I had the urban armor gear one for awhile, but noticed it had ventilation problems due to a form of heat dissipation seems to exist behind the devices' built in kickstand. Also the UAG case has a kickstand with only 4 positions and the cord used to keep the type cover in place broke after 4 months of use.

The Kensington case allows you to use the built in kickstand and is just a better quality built case all around in my opinion

This is the combo of devices I picked up:

Here are a few warnings though:


  1. The battery pack supports a variety of output voltages, including voltages higher than what the Surface wants to accept. If it is set higher than what it should be, it may damage the charging circuits of the Surface, making it unable to accept a charge from the standard power adapter, rendering your device a brick in a very short time (as happened to my Surface 5 days after purchase, but it appeared to have a bad battery in the first place).


  2. The cable does not seem to act like it should, with the light turning on after it has made a connection, but in fact being on as soon as it is plugged into the battery pack. I do not know if this indicates a defective cable or it is just the way this third party cable works.


    I acquired these for an extended trip I was taking, but due to the last minute replacement of my device, I have not since attempted to hook up this combination to my new Surface 4 Pro, even with the voltage set to a proper 12 V. I may one day test this out again, but I am still a bit leary.


    The reviews on Amazon state that these devices work together well with the Surface 4 Pro, so I may have just had a defective original device. You mileage, may, and/or will vary.
