/r/fitness: newbie program picker -> Fat Loss -> More than 10kg/25lbs:

Use a calculator such as this one to get an estimation of how many calories you should be consuming daily. Increase the amount of vegetables you consume (potatoes don't count :) ) because fiber helps in giving a feeling of fullness. Increasing your protein intake (via either consuming more meat or simply drinking whey protein shakes ) will both boost muscle gain and provide a longer-lasting feeling of fullness than carbs will.

Take weekly photographs of yourself, preferably in underwear/shorts so that you can see your belly, thighs and arms. If you're gaining muscle while losing fat, the weight on the scale may change less than you expect, but the mirror doesn't lie. Recording everything you eat will also make you more conscious about your intake and definitely helps in weight loss.

The thing that's really going to make or break your success is how well you focus and stick to your diet. Many people have successfully lost large amounts of fat by switching to a low carb diet. Keep in mind that this may not be the most suitable diet for everyone, but by far the majority of the population should see positive results.

For best results, you should combine this program with some form of exercise. The best form of exercise is the one that you enjoy doing. Whether it's weightlifting, running, swimming, mountain climbing, football, or throwing a frisbee around with friends, anything that gets your heart rate up for an hour or two will be beneficial.

Keep in mind that sustaining a caloric deficit can lead to loss of muscle mass as well, which is usually a Bad Thing. To avoid this, it is usually recommended to do some form of strength training atleast 2-3 times per week. Check out the muscle gain section of the Program Picker for more info regarding strength training programs.

Remember, the exercise will help, but the factor that will decide your fat loss is your diet. If you feel you're too heavy to do bodyweight exercises or anything inside a gym without hurting your joints, you can just go for a pleasant 30-45 minute walk daily while strictly controlling your diet, and you'll have to buy a new, smaller set of clothes soon. Once you reach a weight where you feel comfortable about doing some more strenuous exercise, check out the program picker again.

tl;dr: Eat vegies and protein at a caloric deficit. Take progress pics. Do a form of cardio you enjoy. Lift to maintain muscle, buy the Starting Strength book and get lifting. Become Swole.

Brother, you will think my answer in jest - but my words come from a place deeper than parallel in mine heart.

Purchase for thine self the cookbook "Fifty Shades of Chicken," for therein lie many easy and wonderful rituals by which birdflesh may be transmuted into gains.

With this and the Modern Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding, your swole will resist all attempts at control. Wheymen.

Brother you have discovered the truth of our devotions and achieved enlightenment. Attention is the only reason we lift. Health? There is nothing of health in 600lbs upon our shoulders as we drop our asses within inches of the floor but the attention this brings...

Clothing does not fit our strange proportions , our look is that of Shrek and we say amongst ourselves that they 'mire but do they? Nay, brother, they do not yet still we have their attention and that is enough

We posses the strength to lift a Wagon of whey yet lack the stamina to change a tire. Does this concern us? Nay, brother, not at all. Changing a tire is of no consequence to others yet lift a Wagon and they will pause

Those who bear the cross of fit understand this truth inherently but they lack our physical attainment. To compensate for this they never SHUT THE FUCK UP ALREADY! JESUS CHRIST WE GET IT!!... ahem... forgive me for i am a man of passion.

It is your time , Brother. Depart with pride and form a temple of your own. Spread the word as written in the good book

The best tool for guidance is a basic Anatomy and Physiology textbook, to see all of the muscles, their origins and insertions, and how they generate force. However, that's time consuming and somewhat boring, so here are some quick links to books that have information regarding exercise specificity; i.e. what to do for which muscles you want to work out:

  • Arnold's Newer Book

  • Arnold's Older Book

Still halfway decent and for both genders, despite the title.

  • Starting Strength

Not such a fan of Rippetoe, as I tend to go the bodybuilder route, and strength is less of a priority, but still a good source.

Also, if you're so inclined, a purchasing a single session with a personal trainer to help you sort out your program would do wonders. (Make sure the trainer has some sort of certification, though--B.S. or higher in Sports Medicine/Exercise Science/Athletic Training, ACSM, NCSA, etc.)

I have been looking at one brother, I have read that it's better to get one you can put in the wall on studs in the wall. From what I heard the door ones aren't as safe cause they can slip. But I have not used either. If you can't do that then maybe something like this.

Sportsroyals Power Tower Dip Station Pull Up Bar for Home Gym Strength Training Workout Equipment, 400LBS. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SM8VJ6P/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_lfUIDb90XQ4A3

Brad Schoenfeld's M.A.X. Muscle Plan. The plan incorporates lots of variety. It's a fairly long program (26 weeks, I think) that's composed of several mesocycles that alternate between strength and hypertrophy training. Each week (microcycle) changes up the exercises, # of sets, # of reps, rest interval, as well as adding some supersets. In addition to the healthy number of stiff legged dead lifts and good mornings already in the program, it calls for leg curls, leg extensions and leg presses. I don't have those machines in my home gym, so I just did stiff legged deadlifts, trap bar deadlifts, good mornings, Bulgarian split squats or hip thrusters instead.

Brother, I bid you venture deep into the Amazon where exist perfect armaments to cook the Holy Bird.

A knife and deadly hook will be of aid.

Remember to reach 165 degrees of Fahrenheit at bare minimum to purge the agents of Broki from the flesh. His servant salmonella with it's punishing diarrhea and vomiting threatens to steal thy gains. Also, I think it is tastiest at 170°-180°.

375°F with a coating of regular olive oil followed by hearty spicing of oregano and rosemary is how I eat the Bird. Best cooked in a deep glass casserole dish where the chicken covers the whole bottom; it will soak in its own rich juices. 2.5-3lb (three large breasts) cooks in about 75 minutes.

Brother, you may want to look into Trigger Point therapy

I hope it offers some relief.

I personally acquired my own implements from Brodin's Building (Bodybuilding.com) however I note that the Amazonians offer similar implements to my own for only $10 (Amazon) with free shipping if a Prime friend of their tribe. Other than being a Captain of Crush, any recommendations for grip training for endurance?

> iPhone in pocket.

Bluetooth stereo headset. This is what I've been using for 3+ years. Works like a champ. I also use an iPhone and it is just perfect.

If they are concerned about your joints, perhaps picking up Saint Pavel's book, Super Joints, and adding those drills to your morning routine will help, especially if you do the drills with them?

I am going to guess that you are a teenager and living at home, thus your parent's conerns have more impact on your life than they might otherwise. Do your research about the long term benefits of strength training. Performing your prayers as a teenager actually helps build up your bone density and can protect you from breaks up to your 70's. Adding muscle mass when you are young also protects you as you age.

Possibly, also, finding articles about aged body builders (such as the gentleman in India who just passed away at 104 years of age), and talking about how the leading indicator of mortality in the elderly is a lack of muscle mass- regardless of other health concerns.

If their concerns are really for your joints, ask them to join you on your joint mobility drills. Be cautious of your knees, mine are long gone and I miss them- my right knee is in nearly constant pain, so that is a very valid concern, as a parent, but there is much bad information out there on how our prayers are bad for joints. They are not. If you do, and present your research well, hopefully your parents will respect that you are making an informed decision.

Here is thy sacred text

Though it should be mentioned, if thy brother is on the frugal path, one may find a free pdf through the powers of Googling.

That wretched game, much like this book is the Necronomicon for cardio delinquents.

For what it's worth you could probably remove the stitching with one of these.

This one is my go to protien mix.

The only problem with this brand is that it has gotten quite expensive in the past couple of years.

Praise be to Brodin.

/u/gunslinger_006 linked them! https://www.amazon.com/Inov-8-Fastlift-Weight-Lifting-Thyme-Orange/dp/B00QTCZ69S/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1479859380&sr=8-4&keywords=inov-8+fastlift+335

They were affordable (~100USD) and show no signs of wear. I've owned them for about 6 months now. My previous pair of lifting shoes was a knock-off chinese brand that tore off of the sole, but these ones are solid.

u/gunslinger_006 · 7 pointsr/swoleacceptance

I really love my Inov8 335s:

Solid as a rock.

Socks are cool but fuck athlete's foot. I won't let my feet or socks ever touch the floor at any gym, ever again.
