I LOVE the book that my high school speech teacher used -- A Short Book on the Subject of Speaking. It's a fun little read and has many helpful ideas.

Might not tick all of your boxes, but I’ve used one of these in the past. A bit utilitarian and old school, but certainly better than flowers and WAY better than fucking apples and chalkboards.

Randall Monroe's What If? Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions is a fun read. It's not a narrative, but it follows scientific thinking and if very entertaining. Or, Homer Hickam's October Sky is a good narrative.

I did! I ended up picking up this one, for around $130. I didn't really have much else I needed to buy this year, so it'll go into my $250 for tax deductible classroom spending.

I figure there's enough other things I can do with it, and honestly, I enjoy the coding as a hobby enough that I just really wanted to work with it.

> Reliability : MTBF: 360,000 hours. MCBF: 60,000,000 lines. Auto Cutter: 1.5 million cuts

Should hold me for a while too, since I don't think I'll need to worry about it giving out for a bit!

I also made a small form (not shown) to let me write and print passes to me, for during advisory periods, etc.

I second using Scratch. Also get this book to teach gamemaking. Using this book is the most successful thing I have done and I have been teaching Scratch for years.

This year we had quite a few trans kindergarteners and the teacher had a hard time explaining it in a way the kids understood.

I heard about this book which I owned and I let the teachers borrow it. They liked it so much the teacher bought me a new copy because it was ruined haha.

I’ve used these before:

SO WHAT?: The Writer's Argument
https://www.amazon.com/dp/0190297409/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_0YBNBbERJH4FQ

And

Everything's an Argument with Readings with 2016 MLA Update
https://www.amazon.com/dp/1319085741/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_tZBNBbKZWFF69

“So What?” is by far the cheapest. However, students can rent Everything’s an Argument for $40.

Hope this helps.
