  1. What I advise you to do the following:
    1. Get PPF (Paint Protection Film) full front (if you can afford it)
    2. After the PPF, get a ceramic coating done. there’s a lot of debate of it’s actually needed or effective but I’ve seen many many cases where either side can be “correct” in the sense you can’t go wrong diy vs. getting it done professionally. There are plenty of people here who have done it themselves but please refer to r/Autodetailing if you’re interested. I choose to get mine done professionally and I don’t regret it one bit. Helps to maintain the car very easy. Here’s a pic after getting ppf and coating done: https://i.imgur.com/v3Lpn9g.jpg
  2. I use two bucket method (LOT of tutorials on google and youtube) Here’s a list of every single thing related I purchased for doing my own car wash:
    1. ONR Solution
    2. Chemical Guys MIC_507_06 Professional Grade Premium Microfiber Towel, Gold (16 in. x 24 in.) (Pack of 6)
    3. 2 of Meguiar’s X2000 Water Magnet Microfiber Drying Towel, 1 Pack
    4. Relentless Drive Ultimate Car Wash Mitt - 2 Pack Extra Large Size - Premium Chenille Microfiber Wash Mitt - Wash Glove - Lint Free - Scratch Free
    5. Chemical Guys MIC_7071 Glass and Window Waffle Weave Towel, Red (24 in. x 16 in.)
    6. Grit Guard (2x)
    7. Solo 418 One-Hand Pressure Sprayer, 1-Liter, Ergonomic Grip for Gardening, Fertilizing, Cleaning & General Use Spraying
    8. Windshield Window Cleaner Tool, Unbreakable Extendable Long-Reach Handle, Unique Pivoting Triangular Head, 3 Washable Reusable Microfiber Bonnets, Car & Home Inside Interior Exterior Use - Lint Free
    9. Buy 2 5 gallons buckets at Home Depot/Lowe’s
  3. Tesla should do it for free but some people do end up paying $25-60 but usually free. Hope this helps!

I don't have an extension cable, just the adapter I linked but evse does sell extension cables as well and since I've had a good experience with their adapter I'd probably buy extension cable from them as well if I needed one.

I would assume this would work but I'd be Leary daisy chaining third party adapters together which is what you'd be doing. Is the extension cable necessary for your use scenario? Could you get by with just the adapter and your UMC?

Here's evse's adapter. You could email them and ask them if it would be ok to use the adapter and extension cord together.

https://www.evseadapters.com/collections/adapters-for-tesla/products/heavy-duty-nema-14-50-extension-cord-for-tesla-20-ft

I'll also add that I just searched on amazon for Tesla 10-30 adapter and found this adapter. It also lists an extension cable that is frequently purchased together. I can't speak to the quality of these though but the reviews look positive. Always hard to tell. All I can say is the one I have has worked flawlessly and I used it nearly every day for a year. Here's the one from amazon though.

A few extras I recommend:

  • Dash Cam for sure, I recommend the Blackvue cameras.

  • The Abstract Ocean LED light upgrade The lights that come with the car are pretty weak, and they make a huge difference in the trunk.

  • Abstract Ocean Key Fob Covers which come in leather and silicon (I personally prefer the leather ones, I had both and the silicon didn't hold up very long for me)

  • If you have a large USB music collection, this Low Profile USB Storage Stick will hold your music and it won't stick out like a sore thumb (drive)

  • Model S and X don't come with spare tires, so this Tire Repair Kit from Tesla could come in handy if you have a small leak and don't have time to call roadside assistance

  • I sleep in my car from time to time, so I leave a Tesla Blanket (unfortunately looks like those are no longer available) and a sleeping bag in the frunk. It's very comfy

  • This flashlight has come in handy countless times, it's nice to carry around and it's powerful too

  • A first aid kit and a ResQMe Car Escape Tool which is a spring loaded window breaker and seat belt cutter.

Congrats and enjoy your new car!

Hey guys, I'm getting a P3D and have a question about Sentry mode/Tesla Cam recording. I've bought a JEDA Box because I wanted to keep a Wireless charger + a SSD for recording.

Would it be better to go for a portable SSD like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078SWJ3CF?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share&th=1 , or a SD card with a reader like this: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Endurance-128GB-Micro-Adapter/dp/B07B984HJ5/ref=redir_mobile_desktop?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title ?

I'm just trying to find the best solution + disk size needed if I wanted to keep it installed for a while. I live in TX so the car may be outside during the summers if that affects the temperatures of the devices, not too sure what to go for.

u/RareRibeye · 3 pointsr/teslamotors

To start things off from other threads/videos I’ve seen:

The trunk seems to fit a twin size mattress. One user recommended this. With a twin, two adults should comfortably fit. You could probably uncomfortably fit 3 people (spooning).

Camper Mode: AC drains less battery than heaters. Seat warmers also drain less battery than heaters. Overnight heating in freezing climate seems to drains ~3-4%/hr or ~2.4kw/hr according to this video, but YMMV.

Make sure to lock the vehicle via the Screen and turn off the alarm while you are sleeping in the car or your movement might cause it to beep throughout the night. Also turning off sentry mode is good if you want to conserve more battery as well. Got the above advice along with other helpful tips from this video.

I got some car guys super cleaner
https://www.amazon.com/CarGuys-Super-Cleaner-Effective-Upholstery/dp/B071XB18BF

Works well. Recently found some blue jean stain transferred on the driver seat and it wiped off easily with some dog wipes I had in the car (probably the same as baby wipes, but 10x more expensive, haha).

Enjoy the X! I almost went there, and I think eventually I’ll have one too :)

I bought the 32gb version of this usb for my Dashcam, but it worked for about a day and hasn't worked since. I know others have had success with the 128gb version but just wanted to check before I bought, and to see if people have had better luck with others.

Can you upload a couple of pics or short video of what the setup looks like under the charging pad? I wasn’t sure it would have enough clearance. Would be nice to see either way. Also, seems like if that brand of splitter would work, this one would have to work too: Onvian USB Splitter Cable Male to 2 Female Adapter USB A Cord 2 Port Hub for Data Charging Syncing (Only one Port for Data) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KX4TKH6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_j4iSBb98Z0AHZ. Assuming that, I wonder what would be the most aesthetically pleasing would be.

I just do the Aero Wash Wax All once a week and sometimes spot clean when kids get their prints on the doors.

With my silver cars I barely ever did anything but I also cared a lot less. The black is a total finger print magnet. There aren’t any touchless washes close enough to me that I’d go to all the time. For now the 15 mins per week wash seems to work ok :)

u/hmspain · 2 pointsr/teslamotors

I went with;

Samsung MUF-256AB/AM FIT Plus 256GB - 300MB/s USB 3.1 Flash Drive

and have had no issues;

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D7Q41PM/

It has the additional benefit of being small, so it is hard to see down in the compartment with the USB ports. I just marked the top with a silver sharpie and insert it by feel as necessary.

You will need to format it FAT32 (3rd party programs are available free to do this), and you will have to create a "TeslaCam" folder on the drive before you insert it.

u/TheKobayashiMoron · 3 pointsr/teslamotors

Looks good. Other people have posted that getting a new Aero wheel from a service center is only $200, but this type of repair is a nice option for people that aren't close to one. Plus I'm sure theres labor and stuff on top of the $200.

This touch-up pen is a great match for minor damage.

u/onestopunder · 3 pointsr/teslamotors

Get a 128GB or larger Samsung FIT drive. Works perfectly and has worked for me since day 1. As an added bonus, it's practically invisible.

u/legolasxvi · 11 pointsr/teslamotors

Please be careful of temperature tolerances. I bring this up every time someone posts a drive suggestion thread so I'll paste in my usual response:

Be careful with the temperature tolerances of the drives you use if you live in a market with seasons. I looked at the T5 but nyxed it when I saw it's only rated for 5-35 degrees C (41-95F). In Chicago we regularly get well above and below those temps in a car. Cabin overheat won't even kick in yet at 95.
I switched to the Samsung Fit Plus 256gb when I went through 2 other drives last year (polar vortex and one of the drives being a T5) and hazarded a guess that it was too cold and killing the drives. -25°C to 85°C operating limits on this drive (-13 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit). No issues since. Drive capacity is less but now with the self erasing in v10 I don't have to pop it out and erase once a month. Muuuuuch better temp tolerances and physically much smaller drive is nice as it isn't hanging from a cable in the front compartment.

I bought a Micro SD card and reader recommended on a Tesla forum. To my delight, it has both USB A and USB C plugs, so I can in fact play it on my phone! Actually, it was critical, because Android will happily create 128GB FAT32 partitions while Windows 7 & 10 will not.

Are these the ones? It looks like adding the trunk and frunk mats goes up to $200.

How's the hexagon pattern? Looks like it would be tough to get dust out. May have to spray them out. But they look like they hold water and snow pretty well.

u/Flames5123 · 1 pointr/teslamotors

I have these:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0792RW471/

It doesn't cover the dead-pedal, but that part is easy to clean.

I love the mini pockets everywhere, so if you spill something, it's hard to smear everywhere. It stays very contained.

u/snapbangclick · 1 pointr/teslamotors

I don't have dogs but I've been super pleased with this and have seen several people speak highly of it.

u/halcyoncmdr · 1 pointr/teslamotors

I got the 32GB Samsung FIT Plus and haven't had any issues so far after a couple days. Write speeds were around 60MBps sequentially and around 15MBps random which should be good enough for maintaining speed with the camera streams and manual record saving. For $9 and a dedicated use though it's not bad at all.

u/WeGooded · 1 pointr/teslamotors

I have no experience with the 3rd party versions, but the official Tesla one is just part of the car. It feels like it was always there and will last with the car.
It was tough to justify the price, but I’m glad I did.

I got two Onvian splitters, neatly plugged in, wound up on themselves and used some black electrical tape to tuck everything up behind the pad. Thumb drive is up in there a bit, but accessible. Same with the ‘spare’ open USB port.

It depends on the type of outlet. First, try to find an official adapter from Tesla. With the official adapter, your car will automatically detect the correct amps and volts for the plug.

If Tesla doesn't make an official adapter, you can try to find one online that converts to NEMA 14-50 and use the included 14-50 plug from Tesla. The downside to this is that the Tesla will think you're using a NEMA 15-50 plug and will attempt to draw power for that type of plug. Before plugging in, go into charge settings and lower the amps to what the outlets is actually capable of. For a 30 amp outlets, lower it to 24.

For example, my garage has a NEMA 10-30 outlet. Tesla used to make an adapter for this, but they don't anymore so I had to resort to 3rd party adapters. I bought this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00STD8S7C/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1482324615&sr=8-2&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=nema+10-30+to+14-50+adapter&dpPl=1&dpID=41KnxpPUD%2BL&ref=plSrch

This adapter works well, but I have to lower the amps to 24 before charging. I wish Tesla would just let me buy their official 10-30 adapter. It would be much safer since the car would automatically grab the correct amount of amps.

Interesting. I actually have a usb splitter so I can run a ssd in the car. That means one of the two cables to the wireless pad is power-only. I'll check to see if it's the one side that is functional. Thanks =)

edit: heres the cable https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KX4TKH6/

Just checked and the one with this splitter is the one functioning. So I ordered a second one. Will allow me to add a second ssd to boot.

Been going back and forth on the coating. I did watch some youtube before started and did the two bucket method. From my research it looks like if you just wax it every 3-4 months it should have near the same protection as ceramic. I do have the stuff to diy cermaic coating saved in my Amazon cart though. Was thinking about giving it a go.

Used this wash and wax from Amazon.

u/TeslaLifeisGreat · 4 pointsr/teslamotors

So here is what I have in my Tesla. Keep in mind that this is also being used with the Nomad wireless charging pad and I’ve had absolutely no issues since switching to this setup.

  1. USB 3.0 Hub

  2. MicroSD Card

  3. Flash Memory Reader/Writer

I previously fell victim to the repeated error regarding the read/write speed after the update back in the July/August timeframe. I can no longer find the article but there was a very detailed article on the subject with recommendations on the best drives etc.

I can assure you 100% that this setup has worked fine for me without issue since purchase and that even involves having the wireless charging pad plugged into the USB hub. While it’s not quite as big as your drive it’s enough to last months without formatting it.
u/demonlag · 1 pointr/teslamotors

The optimal Storage solution for dashcam functionality would be a usb SSD like this one for example.

SSDs can withstand way more write-cycles than normal usb sticks due to their more advanced controllers (only relevant if you don't use the entire drive's capacity) and higher binned flash chips.

The one I use is this. Everything works fine but yes I haven’t tested if charging is slower or not. It may be, but gets the job done for me.

I tested this with my PC and only one of the splits is able to do data/power for sure.

u/Eloquent_Cantaloupe · 29 pointsr/teslamotors

I've seen this recommended on the Tesla Facebook discussion. It depends a bit on whether the color is removed or the material is actually scratched - and I can't tell from the photos.

https://www.amazon.com/Solution-Finish-Black-Plastic-Restorer/dp/B006NZRAFE/

If the material underneath is actually scratched away you might need some sort plastic/vinyl repair.

If this is sort of scratch mark made by the material being left behind - like chalk or something leaving a mark behind - then I'd clean it with something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071XB18BF

u/darthmiso · 1 pointr/teslamotors

I got these for $85 and they fit perfectly.

u/thatazianguy · 3 pointsr/teslamotors

I used this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HE66OK8/

Its for Ford, but it works great with the aero wheels and is almost indistinguishable up close.

u/TheBowerbird · 1 pointr/teslamotors

I'd go with this much more economical size:

https://smile.amazon.com/Optimum-NR2010Q-Rinse-Wash-Shine/dp/B00D8DR0AO/

I haven't used the chemical guys version, but ONR seems to be loved by detailer nerds the most out of any of the products.

I use a meguiar's microfiber wash mitt or the ONR sponge make ( https://smile.amazon.com/Optimum-22516-Big-Wash-Sponge/dp/B078DPCYFV )

One bucket method if car isn't that dirty. If really dirty, I'd use two. I do full washes about 60% of the time because my ceramic coating has degraded down to where a lot of dirt remains behind if I drive through rain and I like using my power washer. When I do that I use the same wash mitt or red sponge. The wash mitt is much easier to clean (laundry) than the big red sponge (hand wash usually), but the big red sponge is maybe a bit more mar preventative.

I live in a condo, where I won't be able to install a 50A circuit.

I do however have a NEMA 10-30 for my dryer in my garage. I'll use a 10-30 to 14-50 adapter and set my Model 3 to charge at 24A.
Should be good to charge at about 22 miles/hour using the UMC.

Good enough for my needs until I move to a new place.

So it's definitely legitimate, and I'm certain the write speeds are good enough since I bought [this flashdrive from Samsung.](http://www.Samsung.com/ MUF-64AB/AM FIT Plus 64GB - 200MB/s USB 3.1 Flash Drive https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D7P4SY4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_zYDmDb6119HSZ)

I tried another 4gb flash drive formatted as FAT32, but that too did not work (dashcam icon did not appear when I inserted drive).

Won't be able to verify until v9 goes out the door and we know for sure. I am hoping the USB splitter will have enough juice to power both sufficiently, and if not will have to just wire up a 12v USB charger that I already have up to the front center console from the rear.

I have this thumb drive but since V10 I've been getting "drive to slow" messages, so looking to upgrade, perhaps to a full SSD.

I know the Samsung T5s are often recommended here, but the operating temperature is 0-60 C, and I need something that can operate in winter (probably 0F / -17C) as well as hot summers. What's everyone here using?

u/ftpguy · 4 pointsr/teslamotors

I would recommend not getting a thumb drive. It seems most have issues with standard thumb drives. I would recommend a SD card designed for dash cams. This is what I bought:

Samsung PRO Endurance 128GB Micro SDXC Card with Adapter - 100MB/s U1 (MB-MJ128GA/AM) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B984HJ5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_aX4GDbKBSP7X0

I’m an idiot as well and curbed my back rim on the very first day I had the car. I purchased some touch up paint from Amazon for 15 bucks and fixed it myself though. Looks decent enough. Not perfect but you’d never know unless you’re looking at it up close. This paint matches the aeros pretty much spot on:

I used to have the same USB drive as you, and it also gave me the same error message. Unfortunately, USB drives aren't really meant for constant re-writing, and wear out pretty quickly. What you need is a high endurance microSD card and USB adapter. The "high endurance" cards are designed specifically for dashcams and are made to handle constant re-writing. After upgrading to the high endurance card, I have perfect quality videos with no more error messages.

I'm pretty sure it's not possible to format drives from an iPad or iPhone. I use GUIFormat on Windows to format drives to FAT32.

u/rabidchinchilla · 1 pointr/teslamotors

ok, so like the second one I posted. The triangle in the middle isn't part of the plug receptacle. Well, that is an old dryer plug and to use it you would need a 10-30 adapter. Telsa sold these at one time but I don;t believe they do any more. The alternative would be an adapter like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Conntek-30-Amp-Electric-Vehicle-Adapter/dp/B00STD8S7C

BUT!!! if you were to use an adapter like the one above, a NEMA 10-30P to 14-50, you must manually set the amps on the screen of the car, otherwise you will overload the circuit. The car will think it's connected to a 14-50 (50 AMP) circuit when its actually connected to a 10-30 (30 AMP) circuit. The standard is to only pull 80% of the circuit so you should set the amps on the screen of the car to 24 when you plug in. This would still give you a charge rate over 7 times faster than a standard 110 outlet.

Edit: and to add, I have no idea where to get one of these adapters locally. They do not have a common use.

Been using this USB thumb drive since March. Only seen a gray or 1/2 gray video a couple times. I’d get corrupt videos (500kb with no recordings) maybe 6 files out of hundreds that were saved. I’ve never long pressed to disable prior to removing the drive. Once I’ve reviewed the relevant footage I just delete the irrelevant videos and save the others to my computer and return the drive to car and go on recording with an empty “Saved files” folder. I’ve never deleted any files from the recently saved folder.

I decided to finally get a flash drive for the TeslaCam with the pending updates for sentry mode and the addition of the side cameras to the recording (I already have a regular dash cam, so the current implementation isn't super useful to me).

I have an iPhone X, so I decided to get a SanDisk iXpand Flash Drive that has a lightning connector so I can easy pull the video from the drive to my phone. I also got a Small Splitter so I can continue to use my Jeda Wireless Charging Pad and use TeslaCam. So far so good, no problems charging my phone on the pad (tested both sides), and was able to easily grab some video from my drive to work onto my phone. One thing that bothers me is the quality of the video, but I have the regular dash cam that has way better video quality if for some reason I need it.

I use this splitter and this flash drive. Just plug the splitter into the car, your phone into one side, and the flash drive into the other.

You can also partition the flash drive so that you can record off the Teslacam and play music at the same time, while charging your phone, all from 1 USB port.

Once I get the Jeda pad, I'm going to plug one of the chargers into the cigarette lighter, so then I won't need the splitter.

E: You could remove one of the ports, plug the splitter into it, and replace with one of the splits, with the other split hidden behind with the drive installed.

u/dhanson865 · 3 pointsr/teslamotors

depends on if you want best value or money is no object. It also matters if you live somewhere that is very hot or very cold.

The cheapest I'd recommend is the 256GB https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07D7PDLXC . It has a 5 year warranty but the lower capacity you get the less time it'll last in a Teslacam usage scenario. The 128GB version isn't likely to last a year in that sort of demanding write cycles. The 256GB might last a year or two.

Those handle some temps that SSDs don't and it's not large so it is less likely to be noticed by a burglar/vandal.

A higher capacity SSD will last longer but you might save money in the long run by replacing a thumb drive every couple of years instead of paying up front for a more expensive drive.
