Just going to drop a couple links, I'm on mobile:

Dell $800
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015PYYDMQ/
This is the one my friend has. Lightweight, and great bang for your buck, which is what he was going for. Possibly the best option for its price.

ASUS $870
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DT49XN8/
I personally like this one better, but obviously it's a small bit more. You're basically paying the extra $70 for three things: the sleek design, the touchpad (the best I've used on any laptop), and the SSD. Half the storage, but a slight overall performance boost with the SSD, and it's more reliable.

I put these $800 ones in the mid-range category. They are good computers, and you'll certainly be able to game on them. If you want to spend higher that's fine, but you may want that money for other stuff when you get to college.

To jump to the low-end, this is a great deal:

ASUS $200

Solid laptop if you decide to just get something for schoolwork. Solid state memory, 2GHz processor (fine for lightweight programming, online homework, word processing, definitely not for games :P), reported about 7 hours of battery.

Ah, that sucks.

I know UMass has a really solid CS program so IMO don't transfer out just because the WiFi for your first year is shitty, I'm pretty sure it gets better (at least it did in my case). Been on eduroam like 95% of the time I've been here and only had a minor lag-spike once.

I definitely agree they should add ethernet ports back though, but I remember reading up that it would be really difficult for one reason or another.

(Also I got recommended this adapter and its been working pretty well: link)

Speedtest results: 141Mbps Download and 56Mbps Upload link

Just a heads up, these things are super cheap and really great to have if you're ever somewhere you don't want people smellin' what you're up to: http://www.amazon.com/Smoke-Buddy-Personal-Filter-Blue/dp/B00478UIB2

Hey, I had the same issue as you Sophomore year. I thought it was a network issue as well, but it turned out to be my wireless card. Do you happen to have this card or a similar one? There seems to be something up with certain cards on the UMass networks, since I had issues with that card, and two other wireless USB adapters, but I found this adapter works well on campus.

Who knows why this is happening, but the only solution I've found in 2.5 years is just to get an adapter you know doesn't have the issue.

I use TP Link's N900 Wireless Adapter (Model No. TL-WDN4800).

Link to it on amazon, also note that it is PrimeCampus

If you haven't heard yet, Amazon is directly affiliated with UMass and you can finds details about it at umass.amazon.com.

Turn off the wireless functionality, and plug it in with a USB cable. Usually, they use one like this: https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-USB-2-0-Cable-Male/dp/B00NH11KIK

That sounds like a whole nother problem... Dual Band Adapter, 90% sure this will fix all your problems (for future reference) $12 refurbished.

I just checked online and it looks like this one has everything, which is weird cause I have this one and it only goes to Taylor Series.

My brother had a similar issue. He bought the cheap $20 TPLink wifi card for his newly built desktop. He kept getting microlag in all his games. He then switched to the ASUS PCE-AC56 wifi card and boom everything is fixed, no lag, no issues with internet. Good luck.

Grrr. If i buy a 2,000 foot ethernet cable, can you run it to northeast for me?
I got one of these guys pointing directly at the router (it's in my room). Signal still is awful, since it ques your packets.

This adapter has been working well for me after setting the adapter settings in Windows to use 5G. Although you could be screwed by your dorm room. 😢

Damn, this is exactly what I was looking for.

I'm in southwest so, I have those pesky brick walls. I figured I was going to need to duct tape a sheet to the wall or build a frame with PVC.

I'm assuming a throw of about 2 meters is what I should be looking for? I've been looking at this one.

I think I'm going to build a platform that the projector will rest on before I move back in the winter to solve that problem. Just a simple table.

My only other concern is the speaker set up. Can I just use my current Logitech computer speakers and put it underneath the screen? Is that how you have it set up?
