Another option which is quite popular is the asta 20 freshwater is quite popular.
You do need a light for a planted aquarium - an old school aquarium light is too low.
A desktop lamp with CFL or 6500k LED should also work well for a vase.
Thank you! I think the overall hardest thing to figure out what the type of light I needed. I was recommended this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N4FS6ZU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_DroWDbV02RCPP
And it has good reviews too so hopefully this works
For fluorescent light I know she recommends 1-3 watts per gallon.
I'm not sure what is the equivalent watts in LED since It can be different depending on manufacturer.
In this book the author also uses the walstad method and he measures the necessary light using lumens. He says that most aquarium plants need up to about 120-160 lumens per gallon of water to grow their best. Not sure if this information is correct.
For a cap I used Seachem Flourite Black Clay Gravel https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0019J0ISU/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_i_QlR2DbCMHZK35. It's worked fine I think I want to try sand next time.
I'm gonna try this out.

At the end of the day, I'm setting up a 1.5g tank (jar, technically) that I already own with very little invested otherwise, so if it doesn't work I'll just look into more legit lighting options. I have a feeling this will be sufficient for my application.
