This video is a pretty good primer that can help you get started on preparing mate.

If your US-based, you can buy your mate related gear on Amazon, this is a pretty good starter kit. The wooden "gourd" is not traditional, but it is easier to clean.

There are tons of good Yerba brands to choose from, but to start I'd recommend a few of these:

Canarias
Rosamonte
Guayaki (Traditional) -- if you're US-based, this one is easiest to find, likely even at your local grocery store.

Good luck and enjoy!

I have been drinking yerba mate for decades, and had many different kinds. The one that I have found not only keeps water at the same temperature consistently; but, is the best made and easiest to use is this: https://www.amazon.com/Zojirushi-SM-KHE48AG-Stainless-Steel-16-Ounce/dp/B005PO9T44/ref=sr_1_12?keywords=thermos&qid=1574196053&sr=8-12

I use a stanley thermos. Really nice quality.

I have this bottle in green that I just got at a local hardware store for a little bit less than the online price. It is a little bit more water than I need usually but it is good to have more than you need I think. In any case I have only used quality stuff from this company in the past on camping trips but this is the first I've owned. I like it. The top isn't a pouring spout so you can pour it at any angle, if that makes sense.

So thats my recommendation.

I got this ceramic one from amazon that I like

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018GR1N5O/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If you want a traditional experience go for a gourd. I don't use mine every day because its much quicker to clean the ceramic. But the gourd doesn't get hot on the outside as quick which is nice.

When you talk about Mate to go, do you mean tea-like infusion (Mate Cocido) or actual Mate (this is gourd, thermos, Yerba and straw)? For Mate Cocido I’ve seen many Americans using the French press. It’s easier if you get ahold of mate Cocido in “saquitos” (tea-bag), then you just prepare them as a regular tea.
Now, if you want the actual Mate, a few years ago they introduced this “Mate listo” (the meaning is closer to the idea of “Mate to go”) where you put the hot water in, then some Yerba inside a built-in gourd, pit the cap on an drink Mate.
Here is a link to amazon, where you can see the product. Last time I went to Argentina I bought one, but it wasn’t really good. While you can drink Mate while driving (similar as if you were drinking a soda from five guys) or just feel word and it’s not the same (at least to me).

Try legitimate Argentinian yerba mate. I recommend Rosamonte (Especial): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003IF93TI/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_UgBywbH275VJ4. It's replaced coffee for me. Though the experience is better with a gourd and bombilla, it's fine to put some in a tea bag (I do this at work).

u/Flumptastic I have bought it from here:
https://paisanas.com/collections/argentine-yerba-mate/products/yerba-mate-la-tranquera

Also Amazon has it:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0074MZIG8/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new

Ebay has 1 kilo bags as well.

I like la tranquera as it tastes like a strong traditional Chinese green tea to me. Not like Chinese gunpowder green tea; but other types of green tea, more akin to Chinese Dragonwell green tea.

Ah, Well what about one of those French Press coffee cups that have the plunger inside, like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008TYX1DW

The only thing I could think is that when you pulled the plunger out it would have leaves and sticks all over it and be messy. But maybe there's another way to put the hot water in.

Post whatever solution you figure out here!

This is Canarias (regular). And that is not a water boiler but a thermos! I like having a large thermos as I tend to drink a lot of mate. Here’s a link:

Nice. How about https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008KVCPH2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

To permenantly maintain it at that temperature? I use one to keep a freezer at 0 degrees Celcius for kimchi and meat.

I have several bombillae, and two 1, 2 of them can be opened and scrubbed with a small diameter brush as needed. Tho' mostly I just scrub the outside, and run hot water thru them to clean.

Is your contraption different from a French press thermos like this?
