Tamiya makes a variety of small detail sets: German infantry weapons, they used to make a generic German supplies kit (you might be able to find it), jerry cans, and assorted forms of cover. They also make a specific German machine gun set, which is very good (I have built it).
I'd definitely start with the vintage Tamiya kits, then. Hobby Lobby gets several of them in, at decent prices. Good way to learn new techniques as well, try something different as you go on inexpensive yet good models. They 1/35 german and American figures are also nice. There are better, modern-made ones but for learning and practice, the Tamiya can't be beat.

The price on the observation group is ridiculous. You can get them for under 20 bucks on ebay.
