depends on your friends / player crowd.

are you looking to play through campaigns; scenarios and historical games or are you not actually to interested in history and you and your buds wanna simply play a good wargame with a ww2 backdrop and enjoy min-maxing list building?

I too started with early war Germans and the route i took was narrow down the campaign / battle / formation i wanted to play and read everything i could from war archives; battle reports; history documentaries etc on the topic. I chose the 7th Panzerdivision and their remarkable charge through France as my backdrop (still is). I based much of this on various wikipedia articles; war archives (especially of the German military) and reads by the name of "A bias for action : the German 7th Panzer Division in France & Russia 1940-1941" and "Panzer Commander: The Memoirs of Colonel Hans Von Luck"
I started by buying the Blitzkrieg infantry boxed set; German HQ set (cool dude with monocle), 2x MMG teams; a medium Mortar and the most iconic tank of the 7th in France: the terrible Panzer 38(t).

Great way to start the game off casually and very thematic. Not competitive at all. so really it matters most how you want to play the game - but for me it was right to start historically and then build up more competitive options as i enjoy event/tournament play a lot. now, depending on the ~'meta' of a set event i can bring super fluffy fun lists or more competitively edged litst to big tournaments.

This made the rain lines really easy.

For the pointy bits you'll want a super small brush, obviously! Then don't load much paint, place the tip where you want the edge to be and draw back from there towards the bulk of the patch. Hopefully that makes sense.. :D

I'd definitely start with the vintage Tamiya kits, then. Hobby Lobby gets several of them in, at decent prices. Good way to learn new techniques as well, try something different as you go on inexpensive yet good models. They 1/35 german and American figures are also nice. There are better, modern-made ones but for learning and practice, the Tamiya can't be beat.

Here's some I really like:

The price on the observation group is ridiculous. You can get them for under 20 bucks on ebay.

I have tried to edit the links to shorten them, but for some reason I'm unable to.

I've been super happy with a game plus bag, you have to buy the foam trays separately. It uses pluck foam so you can make the exact shape you need for each mini.

I bought 3 of these a couple of months ago. Scale is pretty much right on or close enough, and it compes with decals and headlight options to make them civilian, French Army, or German Army. Despite being a traditional model kit, there aren't too many parts and it goes together really well. Shipped from Japan so they can take a minute to arrive. I figure they'll be perfect for moving support squads or characters about the field.

I've been hoping to find 1/48th scale French trucks or city busses to use as transports, but I'm afraid I may have to resort to captured Opel Blitzes or something.

So far I've had luck with using squares I've cut from Adhesive Magnetized Sheets to hold plastic infantry to my metal-bottomed toolkit. I add a spot of white glue to help out the magnetic sheet adhesive.

All three came in this set, very high quality and fun to build but they are 1/72 scale

Amazon has them available, I use these:

60mm thickness is the key, and can cut it using a standard hobby knife.
