I'm not a heavy grower but I bought a cheap safety razor, like this one, and a bunch of blades, like these, a few years ago and haven't had to rebuy in years.

  • I shave once or twice a week;
  • I replace the blade every time but you could use it 2-3 times I guess;
  • At 1p a blade I'm getting each shave at 0.33p-1p a blade, say twice a week;
  • Therefore, I spend 1 (pence)* 3 (times a week) * 52 (weeks a year) £1.52 a year on the expensive side on shaving (minus soap).

    I'd have to shave for 5 years to be as expensive as a Dollar Shave Club's monthly cost.

    If one were to shave daily and replace the blade every time it would cost you £3.65 a year in blades.

I get 3 then swap out, you could get more but it starts to tug and it's not worth it, I bought a green pack on amazon for like £17 and I think it was 15 packs of 10 blades.
So it's dirt cheap in comparison.

edit: I got it so wrong but it's still dirt cheap

Mine are even cheaper, once they come back in stock I get 100 blades for under two winstons

I really couldn't get on well with those Derby blades. Most were fine but the quality control was awful. I changed to these http://www.amazon.co.uk/100-Astra-Superior-Platinum-Shaving/dp/B00CK7NQ8Y and they last an awful lot longer, and I don't have the problem of 1/3 of them being dull before they even get used

You may want to consider a vintage Butterfly-twist Gillette razor from Ebay.

I have 2 of these, plus an EJ and a Merkur - for cleaning purposes, the Gillettes beat the modern ones hands down.

I prefer Astra blades 100 for £10

For soap, i use Ingrams whipped up in a wide cappuccino mug.

I own quite a selection of razors, and they all perform equally well. I get as good a shave from a £3.99 plastic Gillette DE razor as i do from a £60 Merkur.

What matters most is technique and blade quality. Astras are good blades, but technique matters most.

Read and search this subreddit for various guides, but this dudes Youtube video series was all i needed.

Just remember to never go sideways / diagonal, and to never scoop the razor up when you’re shaving, if that makes sense. Keep your wrist rigid when going up your leg.

I’m using some Astra blades because I don’t know anything about DE shaving yet. I’m not liking the shave soap it came with though.

Hey all, I had my first go with a cheapy razor I bought on a whim, along with some cheap blades

Sadly cannot try proper lather as I am allergic to damn near everything and have incredibly sensitive skin. I make do with perscription moisturiser.

Didn't go great, but not terrible either.

What I would like to know is how much does skill/practise factor in to the experience?

And how much of a difference do the more expensive razors and blades make? Is it small incremental improvements or is there a sharp increase once you jump from the cheapest to the first reasonable tier?

Thanks to anyone who sees this :)
