If you absolutely need non-stick, here's an alternative to Teflon skillets that's PFOA-free anyway:

I've used them for years. Just scrub with a soft cloth and sprinkle of borax if things start sticking (means it's not clean enough) and it'll be like new without scratching the coating.

If it's burning because it's sticking to the pan you might try a different kind of pan. I use

Your mom should not have gotten stainless steel. She obviously doesn't know what different pans are for.

Anodized aluminum with a non stick coating is what most people want regardless of what they think they want.

would be good choices for 99% of people. Stainless steel is for people who really know what they are doing otherwise it's just a pain in the ass. You'd be better off with cast iron than stainless steel imo.

The stove has nothing to do with it.
