As others have said, that price of Chromebook is going to be tough to do much other than use the internet.
Personally, I would (and did) put $250 from the desktop to the Chromebook and get this.
It's a pretty decent computer, and if you can use crouton, you can use near straight-up linux to do light gaming (what I use it for), and your other hobbies.
A $500 dollar PC is still going to be pretty comparable to your Ultrabook, I think (I of course don't know how nice your ultrabook was).
Acer Chromebook 15 (Yuna) 4gb RAM, Upgradable m.2 SSD, Core i5-5200U CPU, 1080p full HD display. It's really great.
