Here's my copy/pasted response to this sort of question because it comes up so damn often.

---

Get a pair of headphones and a mic.

If you want surround sound with your headphones, go for the Asus Xonar DG($24) as your sound card. It is very inexpensive and offers Dolby Headphone(ie, it allows you to have virtual surround sound on any pair of headphones - certain headphones work better with this than others, check out this thread at Head-Fi for a plethora of headphones reviewed with Dolby Headphone in mind).

As for the microphone, the common choice is the Zalman zm-mic1($9). Another great choice if you want a better microphone is the Antlion ModMic($33).

As for the headphones, this is a very personal thing. Do you want to be able to accurately pinpoint the location of footsteps in first person shooters? Go for something that is reviewed well by Mad Lust Envy in his thread. Good choices would be the Audio Technica ATH-AD700, the AKG K701/K702/Q701, the Sennheiser HD558/HD598. All of these are open headphones, which tend to be better if you want positional accuracy, but if you'd prefer a closed pair, the Beyerdynamic DT770/DT880(partially open) are rather good. Keep in mind that the Beyers and the AKGs should not be used without an external amp. The other ones should be fine to run off the sound card.

If you don't need pristine positional accuracy in first person shooters, you could go for a huge number of different headphones to suit your tastes. Here is a great thread on Head-Fi comparing many different headphones.

Also,

>USB if possible.

You win all of my why for the day.

K-On turned out to be a big product seller. All of the girls' instruments, as well as Mio's AKG K701 headphones that she's wearing in this episode had big spikes in sales after they appeared on the show.

I can't recommend the Sennheiser HD 202's enough. Don't let the price fool you. I've been buying these headphones for years. (Actually the model I own isn't currently in production but was succeeded by the HD 202's). I accidentally broke my last pair and just bought a new pair of these. I own many different headphones including a pair of AKG-K701's and I actually prefer the Sennheisers for most casual listening.

u/QuipA · 3 pointsr/headphones

> Basically, are these the K702 65th Annie?

no..the annie and the K7XX are tuned differently and have more bass.

But they did indeed change the pads and headband to the same style as the K712 and Annie.

But be careful! AKG managed to confuse the shit out of online retailers and sometimes they use pictures of the new version while actually selling the old one...or like Amazon Germany, using pictures of both generations at the same time.

So: you need some headphones:

Sony MDR-XB700:
Decent phones, popular because they've got good bass punch, but they're unbalanced towards that range. Should be fine for gaming, but they wouldn't be my first suggestion. Suggested because those big over sized muffs are pretty comfy.

Sony MDR-SA1000: Hot damn I remember these. Great phones, comfy for long wear, easy to hear through, but easy to drown out the world by pumping up the volume a little bit. Fairly balance range response, decent sound stage, good pricing.

AKG K 701: I shit you not, these headphones have caused my girlfriend to have an orgasm. Quite possibly the finest piece of audio gear I've laid ears on, but there's a catch. You can't get orgasm-inducing sound out of them without an amp, they're just too power hungry. Though, an amp would help any of these phones. I would consult this review for a decent explanation of the amp situation.

For Microphones, I've had two of these: good audio quality, and while not good enough for audio sampling, they are great for voice comms. Personally I think that desk mics work better, since most players seem to have a hard time keeping their heatset mics from rubbing all over their faces.

Edit: Link's 'n shit.

Wasn't this the show that led to the AKG K701s to sell out everywhere a few years back?

u/kiwiandapple · 2 pointsr/headphones

For gaming the X2 aren't that great, for sounds trage the K712 are about equal with the HD58X. They have a bit more bass..

However the legendary AKG K701 are £108. Which is a steal in my book.

u/Sniper_Brosef · 2 pointsr/xboxone

Honestly, pairing the Astro Mixamp Pro with your preferred headset or you can just pair it with a modmic and your favorite headphones.

All of the above is just my personal preference at the moment. I'm not an audiophile in the slightest but was guided in my choice by this post.

u/kare_kano · 2 pointsr/headphones

Well if you insist on open, the Sennheiser HD558 seem to be available for ~120€ right now, so I kinda have to point you at them. Great pair of headphones, can't go wrong with them.

The AD700X are out of your budget. They're good, but I can think of several alternatives for less money.

I would like to suggest the AKG K701... they're considered to be a higher class than the HD558, and I believe they have a fast detailed bass that would work great for DnB. But they're 120€ only if you get them used (for what it's worth, that's how I got mine, and you can get a pair where only the box has wear marks, not the headphones). And the second bigger issue is that the K701 need an amp to drive them well, and the Fiio K1 is about 50€, so you'd really put the "flexible" part of your budget to the test. OTOH a DAC/amp combo is never a bad thing to have.

Some other great choices in case you want to read some more and reconsider closed back: ATH A500x (not AD500x), or the V-Moda XS (used). These would offer more impactful bass at the expense of soundstage, their sound signature is a lot of fun (while not skimping on quality), are better quality/better tuned than the M50x, and don't need an amp. I think they're likely to offer a more entertaining experience for your first steps into serious headphones. Perhaps I'm speaking out of my ass here, but I always felt that open cans are something that people should get as their second "good" pair, after they've had a chance to experience decent headphones for a while and have a better idea of what they want.

TL;DR If in doubt, grab the HD558 and don't look back.

u/Mr_Pickle · 2 pointsr/buildapc

All I know is, if I were given $250-$300 to spend on headphones alone, there is no way I wouldn't buy the AKG K701 over the Astro A40. The JVC-RX900, especially with the "felt mod" have been compared to K701's.

u/ewic · 2 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

They don't sound like utter shit. The top of the line beats sound like a good pair of $75 cans... for 300+ dollars.

I think the big problem with them is that they are an insult to the "proper" audiophile community, because people will get them because they think it makes them look like they care about their music. The reality is that they don't really care as much as they think, because they did not do the proper research ahead of time and select a more appropriately priced pair of headphones.

If you really must spend more than $250.00 on a pair of headphones, then for your consideration

u/chkchkchks · 2 pointsr/anime

Those look like AKG headphones which are pretty damn nice.

u/Opouly · 1 pointr/headphones

Hmmm that makes a lot of sense actually. I just like the look of wooden things really. I ended up going with these. Definitely not wooden but Amazon Prime had a good deal. I probably should've waited for feedback but I'm too impulsive.

u/dumpstergirl · 1 pointr/classicalmusic

I did extensive of research a while back, but sadly don't have it all with me now. I still have a bunch of top picks saved on my Amazon wish list tho:
http://amzn.com/w/8LC7V99WN71H

The long and short of it is that I really like Beyerdynamic and Sennheiser, Bose is way overpriced for anything but their noise-canceling ability, and open-air is optimal for classical. I, however, wanted closed or semi-closed 'phones because I wanted to blast opera and Rachmaninoff loud without the person in the cube 2 feet away from me being any the wiser for it. Open air has a great deal of leakage.

In grad school I was using these relatively cheap 'phones mainly because the noise canceling worked amazingly well on the noisy, crowded shuttle bus. They were pretty rugged but with enough abuse eventually broke on me. I can't speak for any of the higher-quality headphones on my list as I have to wait 'till I get a job before I can buy a set.

All the 'phones linked in the above list were ones I set apart during hours of research on sites like head-phi looking for classical/opera 'phones.

Note that the Grados are more rock-type phones but the punchy bass can be pretty nice for classical. However, they were less comfortable than other phones, so if you wear them all day (as I do) people recommended installing the Sennhieser ear pads (also on the list).

Let me know what you get and your opinions on it; the feedback will help me decide what to get someday!

EDIT: Out of that list the favored picks were:

Sennheiser 598

AKG 701

Beyerdynamic 440

u/MiscRedditor · 1 pointr/headphones

>What are you expecting to gain from higher impedance cans?

Well, it's mostly due to there being more high impedance headphones to choose from in the range/type that I'm looking for. For example the DT 880 250 Ohm and the AKG K 701.

A bit off topic, are there any you'd recommend?

>The only real problem with a Magni is the gain is a bit high for 2V sources. But if you don't mind living at the low end of the volume control, it's no big deal.

That shouldn't be too much of an issue, hopefully I'd learn to not turn the knob too quickly =P. Would that affect sound quality at all? Are there other desktop headphone amps that you'd suggest or other solutions to consider?

Thanks!

I have been doing research for days now. I just went through Mad Lust Envy's List and his highest rating for competitive is AKG K701 How do these compare to the 363D headphones I have to return due to defective microphone?

The idea here is best competitive gaming positional queues and awareness. Please make sure to check my computer to make sure whatever you suggest doesn't require an external sound card or amp/dac thing and if it does please try to reach the same ballpark price with all required items included. I really appreciate everyone's help, been going crazy not being able to find a concrete answer to this question. Legit googled everything I possibly could and read everything I could on /r audiophiles/headphones. Consensus is don't buy into "gaming" headsets. Purchase a pair of headphones + modmic but the 363D's seemed great and it's about the only headphone I read about on those forums that people weren't angry about. Just want to spend my money wisely that is all. I spend my life gaming lol.

> * Budget - Up to $250 in total. Will need a microphone, idc if that's a headphone+modmic or whatever is best for the price. (wiggle room if seriously worth it). I currently just bought Sennheiser PC 363D headphones off ebay for about $180 and liked them but need to return them because the microphone is defective; want to know if there is something better (maybe headphone/dac/modmic?) I should get before I purchase another pair. Here is a link to my computer I use if that matters for whether or not I need external sound/amp. ASUS G751JT 17-Inch Gaming Laptop 2014 model

  • Source - PC gaming imaging/positioning/directional queues. I just want to be able to hear exactly where the enemy is by sound and also pick up that sound earlier.
  • Requirements for Isolation - Is this open vs closed? None. Open I hear is better for positional queues.
  • Will you be using these Headphones in Public? No.
  • Preferred Type of Headphone - Unknown
  • Preferred tonal balance - Not sure. Just want competitive gaming advantage with clear clear precise audio queues for things like footsteps. The game I'm playing is PlayerUnknown's BattleGround.
  • Preferred Music - Not important.
  • What would you like to improve on from your set-up - I want ultimate sound clarity. I was playing a duo game with my buddy and I was hiding in a house and he heard a guy walking outside WAY before I ever heard him. He said he's using like a soundblaster card with scout mode. I just want to be able to hear like him. The Sennheiser 363D was a massive improvement for directional queues in compared to my HyperX Cloud 2's I had before. Just want to make sure before I return and purchase new 363d's there nothing better I could do in that price range.

Aren't they the ones you can mod into the 598s by removing the foam pieces inside?

Stylish as fuck and they're great quality and open back, which is essential for gaming.

u/that_canadian_ · 1 pointr/headphones

I've been doing some research on which headphones might be the best ones for my listening and I have had trouble finding the perfect pair.

I've been looking into buying a pair of open back headphones recently, as I have started getting more into the music and audiophile lifestyle. However I don't know where to start. Currently I'm using the BOSE OE Soundlink, as my everything headphones... and while they're perfect for me traveling and going to classes, they don't have the open sound stage or the power that Id want with something for home listening.

I've looked into it and I narrowed my search down to these three headphones; the
BayerDynamic Dt990's, the Sennheizer HD650's, and the AKG 701's; however, while they're all good quality headphones... I'm not certain that any one of these is exactly what I'm looking for.

This is where i need help, if anyone knows of any headphones that would match my preferences or has any suggestions about the ones I already have on my list, I'd greatly appreciate any tips that can be thrown my way.

My Preferences:

  • under $500
  • something that needs an amp (these will be home use only)
    ----OHM preferably above 175?
  • Doesn't look terribly ugly (I really like how the dt990's look)
  • Has a solid base that i can feel
  • not too sharp in the trebles and high tones.
  • removable wire (not necessary but preferable)

Sorry, but we got to remove this as it breaks rule #13. Threads like these are better suited for subreddits like /r/headphones, /r/audiophile and /r/gamingsuggestions.

Just a quick tip from an audiophile though. The ATH-M50's are amazing (there's no doubt about that), however they aren't the best for gaming. If you're mainly going to use a pair of headphones for gaming (or just at your computer), then I recommend you check out headphones like:

u/Alstroe · 1 pointr/splatoon

It sorta looks like the AKG K701, just that it's missing a few details like the vents along the sides.

u/Vexas · 1 pointr/headphones

Budget - $230-$250

Source - PC/iPhone

Requirements for Isolation - Home, not much needed (but some).

Preferred Type of Headphone - Full size

Preferred tonal balance - Balanced

Past headphones - Sennhesier PC 360, the quality was ok but I've never had a good pair of headphones for music/movies and would like a nice sounding pair (obviously).

Preferred Music - All kinds, not sure if I really like anything specific. Not a huge bass guy but I like a bit of it.

Other: Have been looking at the AKG k 701s which seem to have a bigger jackplug then I am used to. How do I get this to fit in my computer's mic output? And how about a phone's output?
Also, reading the wiki says an amp is recommended for these headphones. Do I get a 72.8 db amp (read that was good for these), and if so, where do I get it? What does it plug into?
Thanks in advance for the newbie questions

u/mindkilla123 · 1 pointr/audiophile

These brands have so many different headphones, and you say listen to them? Are there places that I can go to to test them? I don't know if I want to just buy things and screw myself over with something bad. These look like what I really plan on getting, are they a good band?

u/vanFail · 1 pointr/headphones

Hey there, I posted yesterday too and need some more advice in deciding for a headphone+mic combo

Budget: $300, flexible

Source: My PC, so I guess standart audio output/USB

Requirements for Isolation: I'm currently using Sennheiser PC 360, which are completely open. I love this design because I don't like being cut-off from the world when I'm sitting at my desk

I will not use them in public, maybe a lan-party or two a year but thats it

Type of Headphone: I have very sensitive ears, so nothing that touches my ears.

Tonal balance: Balanced

Past headphones: Sennheiser PC 360. I've had those for over 5 years now and I love them. I can wear them for long gaming sessions and the microphone is usually pretty good. I use my headphones 90% of the time for gaming

Preferred Music: I listen to everything, EDM and classical music is what I hear most of the time

What am I looking for?: I'd love to hear where exactly enemies are, crystal clear sound and comfort even when wearing it for 5 hours+

I want a headset that I can have on my head for extended periods of time without any loss of comfort.

I looked into the Sennheiser HD 598 and into the Phillips Fidelio X2/27

Friend of mine also recommended me this one: http://www.amazon.com/AKG-701-Studio-Reference-Headphones/dp/B000EBBJ6Y

Same friend also recommended this Amp DAC
http://www.amazon.de/FiiO-E10k-Olympus-Kopfh%C3%B6rer-Verst%C3%A4rker/dp/B00LP3AMC2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1463518630&sr=8-2&keywords=kopfh%C3%B6rerverst%C3%A4rker

Top Priority for me is comfort and sound quality.

Thanks in advance!

From what you described yeah I'd say the AD700X would be excellent for the budget, clearly better than 558.

BTW if you can order from Amazon UK check out this K702 and this K701 (same headphones, the 702 has removable cable). Those are excellent deals. Keep an eye on both, the price fluctuates, but it's currently at a historical low point. They need an amp to achieve another 10-15% quality, but you can use them without it for the time being. They're about 2 levels above 558 and AD700X.

Another very good choice is K612 Pro.

u/Seal160 · 1 pointr/headphones

Budget - $200 ~ 400 max (Not including DAC and amp)

Source - Windows 7 Desktop PC

Isolation - I will be using these in my own room, typically there is some white noise, computer fan, room fan, etc.

It can't be loud enough to wake other people up through a wall (Like a speaker would). Yet preferably be loud enough to drown out low level ambient noises (Birds if window is open, hum of computer fans).

I dont think it will, but I'd prefer it if does leak from the phones, doesnt get picked up by my blue yeti mic

Used in Public - No - Inside only

Type - Over the ear, Open or Closed Back (Undecided)

Preferred Tonal Balance - No preference, I just want it to be absolutely amazing for gaming, hear directionally where people are coming from in FPS games, and crap my pants amazing for scary games. Gaming immersion and streaming is my main concern here, though I do enjoy listening to classic rock, metal and some classics.

Past Headphones - Logitech G35s - I love how these fit, I know, they are closed back and are cheap, but I like them alot because they drown out low level ambient and give me directional sound for games.

Preferred music - Rock, Metal, Classic Rock, Classical

Improvements - I would like to be able to hear directionally, as I can with my g35, however I would like to hear more clearly and see what a "Good" set of headphones can offer.

Note: I DO NOT need a mic, I have a Blue Yeti on my desk.

Location - US

These maybe overkill, but I was considering the [AKG 712] (https://www.amazon.com/AKG-Over-Ear-Mastering-Reference-Headphones/dp/B00E4WXWBE/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1469467580&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=akg+712) , [Sennheiser H650] (https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-650-Professional-Headphone/dp/B00018MSNI/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8) or [AKG 701] (https://www.amazon.com/AKG-701-Studio-Reference-Headphones/dp/B000EBBJ6Y/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8) with most likely the Magni 2.. basically I want to hear amazing rifle shots, feel like I am driving tanks, helicopters, and hear the whining cries of my opponents in clear crisp directional quality.

Heavily Leaning on the AKG 712s, I keep going back and reading about them.. Definitely need suggestions here

Looks like you are pretty limited since you are in the Netherlands. I personally wouldn't get the 598 for the music above, I thought the 598 were too relaxed for these genres.

I took a look in the amazon website, can't really read it but here are a few decent choices for what you are looking for.

The Cloud II isn't a very bad option. You should try it and see if you like it first. If they aren't good enough, then try one of the options above. It does make more sense to buy another headphone though since you have a standalone mic already.

u/ImMufasa · 0 pointsr/halo

No matter what you choose a headset is going to require multiple wires. For mic quality no gaming headset is going to give you good quality (and they'll give you even worse sound quality). This setup is around the same as the Astros with their mixamp and is infinitely better quality in both sound and mic along with comfort.

u/PUBERT_MCYEASTY · 0 pointsr/Rainbow6

I deleted my comment because it came off as pretty dickish. I can tell the difference between above me and below me perfectly fine with my DT990s and audio settings set to Hi-Fi. I don't know what else to tell you other than suggesting different headphones, because they make a big difference. I'd suggest AD700x, AKG K701, or AKG K702 if you want the best sound localization you can get.

With that said, there is still room for improvement within R6's sound engine.
