Here's my copy/pasted response to this sort of question because it comes up so damn often.

---

Get a pair of headphones and a mic.

If you want surround sound with your headphones, go for the Asus Xonar DG($24) as your sound card. It is very inexpensive and offers Dolby Headphone(ie, it allows you to have virtual surround sound on any pair of headphones - certain headphones work better with this than others, check out this thread at Head-Fi for a plethora of headphones reviewed with Dolby Headphone in mind).

As for the microphone, the common choice is the Zalman zm-mic1($9). Another great choice if you want a better microphone is the Antlion ModMic($33).

As for the headphones, this is a very personal thing. Do you want to be able to accurately pinpoint the location of footsteps in first person shooters? Go for something that is reviewed well by Mad Lust Envy in his thread. Good choices would be the Audio Technica ATH-AD700, the AKG K701/K702/Q701, the Sennheiser HD558/HD598. All of these are open headphones, which tend to be better if you want positional accuracy, but if you'd prefer a closed pair, the Beyerdynamic DT770/DT880(partially open) are rather good. Keep in mind that the Beyers and the AKGs should not be used without an external amp. The other ones should be fine to run off the sound card.

If you don't need pristine positional accuracy in first person shooters, you could go for a huge number of different headphones to suit your tastes. Here is a great thread on Head-Fi comparing many different headphones.

Also,

>USB if possible.

You win all of my why for the day.

Here's another option. Grab a damaged box or slight cosmetic imperfection pair from Amazon for $147.45. No difference in sound quality, prime shipping, no month-long wait.

u/Rashkh · 8 pointsr/headphones

I had exactly three wow moments with headphones.

  • Sony MDR-J10 to Shure SE110. My first thought was "this can't be real". This purchase got me started on the road to spending far too much money on audio gear.
  • Sony MDR-V600 to Sennheiser HD595. It was mostly the clarity that did it. The V600's bass bled well into the midrange, and was very muddy to boot.
  • Sennheiser HD595 to AKG Q701. The massive increase in soundstage actually made me a bit dizzy for a minute. I wasn't expecting such a huge difference between the two pairs.

While I've had other upgrades in the past, the sheer difference in the sound is what made me say wow. Going from the SE110 to the SE215 and then to the Triple Fi 10's didn't have anywhere near the effect on me as the above three examples. Same goes for when I recieved my dac and amp.

So lovely, Amazon has them on sale $189 with free shipping.

According to the artist, they are a pair of AKG Q 701.

Turtle beaches are among the worst crap you can buy.

If you want to really drop a decent amount, you can buy some pretty good audiophile headphones for a bit over $200. You'll need to get a separate microphone then, but that is a very good option for music and gaming.

Something like the dt990-pro, q701, or HD598

Or if your budget is more, check these out...just know the $250 and $400 ones would benefit greatly from/requires an amp and/or DAC, respectively.

Q701 and FiiO e10.

Get the cans used and the e10 new for a total of around 260ish, probably even less if you ebay it or just buy used on amazon, I think the cheapest I saw both together was 230ish. For what it's worth, I bought both of my FiiO amps from amazon, used, and they both came essentially fresh out of the box. My e17 had a small nick on the back corner, but I never notice it. Other than that, check your local craigslist. I've heard of people finding Senn 598 for less than 100. (Mind you, those headphones are a different sound signature than the XB500 or Q701, I just used them as an example.)

u/ressis74 · 2 pointsr/headphones

I have both the HD280s and SRH-840. The SRH-840 is more flat, but has far less noise isolation.

With the 840s I can still hear people talking nearby. With the 280s there was nothing but music.

The SRH feels light, but it has survived 3 years of daily use in the office (I'm fairly gentle to it). The 280 felt more solid, but I haven't used that in 3 years (wife took it). My wife is very hard on the 280s. They still work. The cable is all but destroyed, but the drivers and headband still looks mint.

A bit above your price range is the AKG K702; it is often ~$250. These sound flatter than the SRH, but that might be because I have a better listening environment at home. I got mine for $160 a couple years ago. You could also wait for the K7XX mass drop to come back. The K7XX and K702 are apparently the same headphone, but the K7XX is cheaper.

I've heard that the AKG Q701 is also the same headphone, and currently it's <$200 on Amazon. I don't have the Q701 though, and I haven't compared the two.

u/mrguy470 · 2 pointsr/headphones

I have encountered significant discounts for:

>Sennheiser HD650

>SennHeiser HD600

>AKG k701

>AKG Q701

>AKG k702

I primarily listen to classical music and 70s/80s rock. I have about 400 USD available for the phones and any needed accessories.

They would be run off of my ASUS Xonar Essence STX Sound Card.

Second best option would be the HD 598.

Do you realise that 5.1 and 7.1 are pure marketing gimmicks?

Stereo is better at positional audio for headphones/headsets, Here and Here are examples of what can be done with stereo.

Here are some good headphones that will easily beat any headset, well under budget too. For a mic try Modmic or the Zalman.

Edit: The best for positional audio below like $500 is this. For durability the Audio Technica M50x and Beyerdynamic dt-770 are good.

u/Brewi · 1 pointr/headphones

Thank you for those. I will look into them.

My father has a pair of AKGs from the 80s when he was in college, which made me do a little research into them (obviously they are higher priced) These seem to fit my price range. Are they any good for the money?

EDIT: Would those need an amp? Is there some sort of metric that can be used to determine whether the headphone needs an amp or not?

u/mightymm · 1 pointr/gifs
u/Mad_Economist · 1 pointr/CabaloftheBuildsmiths

Hmm. Without a preferred sound signature, I'm not entirely sure what direction to send you, here. Presuming you go with something along the lines of DMZ's build (though you'd need a new one, given the amount of time that's passed, and might also want to invest a bit more in the mouse), you have about $230 free. This being the case, there're two headphones which immediately come to mind for me:

[Beyerdynamic's] (http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/comparison-beyerdynamic-dt-880-32-ohm-dt-880-250-ohm-and-dt-880-600-ohm-headphones) [DT] (http://www.head-fi.org/products/beyerdynamic-dt-880-pro-250-ohm-semi-open-reference-headphone/reviews/5572)[880] (http://www.head-fi.org/products/beyerdynamic-dt-880-pro-250-ohm-semi-open-reference-headphone/reviews/4000) ([$160] (http://www.adorama.com/als.MVC/nspc/revisedProduct?sku=BDDT880P250&emailprice=t&utm_term=w1YVKBQV9XwuWo5W:t1iIQQvUkVRw5QBxyjDVo0&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=Other&utm_source=rflaid62905&cvosrc=affiliate.62905) after [$25 mail-in rebate] (https://adorama.4myrebate.com/?oc=ADO-10059) via Adorama) would be the first. It's quite famous for its excellent comfort and very detailed, accurate sound signature. The treble is fatiguing for some, but nobody disputes that they're incredibly detailed headphones. I'm quite fond of Beyers of all stripes for metal, which is why this is where my mind goes first, and that's a hell of a price for them.

[AKG's] (http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/akg-quincy-jones-q701) [Q] (http://www.head-fi.org/products/akg-q701-premium-class-reference-headphones-quincy-jones-signature-line/reviews/6575)[701] (http://www.head-fi.org/products/akg-q701-premium-class-reference-headphones-quincy-jones-signature-line/reviews/11822) ([$183 via Amazon] (http://www.amazon.com/AKG-Signature-Reference-Class-Premium-Headphones/dp/B004444OFK)) would be the second. The K/Q700 series are absolutely famous for their performance as gaming headphones, and the Q701 is no exception, holding a [9.5/10 for competitive usage on MadLustEnvy's gaming headphone guide] (http://www.head-fi.org/t/534479/mad-lust-envys-headphone-gaming-guide-2-17-2015). The Q701s are also a fairly bright-leaning headphone, though I consider them fairly neutral myself, and their soundstage and imaging is absolutely stellar for that price. Their headband bumps are rather infamous (and, indeed, some users have claimed that they've left grooves in their heads), but their comfort is quite good in all other respects.

Now, both of these headphones are fairly hard to drive, so if you went with either, I'd recommend pairing them with either a dedicated amplifier, or an amplifier-DAC combo. [FiiO's E10K for $65 on Buysonic] (https://www.buysonic.com/products/fiio-e10k/) should be able to drive both of them (though the Beyers are pretty damn power-hungry), and packs a pretty decent DAC to boot.

These are, of course, just two headphone options, and there're a lot of good alternatives out there, particularly if you want a more bassy sound. If you like, I'll be happy to offer more if you want them.

Hey guys, before I start I just want to thank you for taking the time.

Budget: $200 (whatever cheaper than this for same quality does the trick

Source: Desktop, laptop, phone, ipod

Isolation: None required. Comfort is more important

Type: Anything but IEMs and buds. I have cheap ones.

Tonal Balance: I honestly don't know what I want here as I'm new to this concept. But some booms and bass without losing mid and highs would be nice

Past Experience: Skullcandy {Skullcrushers, Hesh, Lowriders, Smoking Buds, Jackets, cheap buds} Bose { 1 closed over ear active noise isolation} Steelseries {Siberia V3 and some neckband model I can't remember} and I borrowed some gaming headsets.

Music: I listen to everything but I'm going to be mostly focused on EDM, DnB, Trance, Indie/Altern, R&B, Jazz and Hip Hop. So something like the bass on this
I'm going to be listening to stuff like this:

Roosevelt

Arctic Monkeys

Cruz

Miike Snow

Diplo

Subformat

Improvements: The comfort of the Siberia V3 but hopefully with a less mediocre sound and something better than my Skullcandy experiences. Though I must say my cheap $20 dollar Skullcandy IEMs sound better than the V3.

Location: Northern Virginia, US.

I've read the guides (that are 4 month old) and I came with these options:

Sennheiser HD 558

Audio-Technica ATH-M50

Sennheiser HD 598
I'm more inclined to this because of looks

AKG Q 701

Beyerdynamic DT-880 Pro Headphones (250 Ohm)

Grado Prestige Series SR225e

If anybody has any recommendations on which one I should pick out of this or even recommend something else that'd be nice, since the guides are 4 month old and lots of things come out in 4 months. I also noticed nobody mentioned Shure.
In a future I'd love to learn more about DACs and buy stuff to build my setup.

u/Dog_Sharts · 1 pointr/edmproduction

I've heard good things about the M50X, so not trying to sway you from those, but Amazon has an amazing deal on the AKG Q701s right now ($169). They're open back, so they won't block outside noise, but I picked up a pair for mix referencing and they're phenomenal at that price.

http://www.amazon.com/AKG-Signature-Reference-Class-Premium-Headphones/dp/B004444OFK

EDIT: I also own Shure 840s which are closed back. They're great for mixing and would be at your price point (just to throw another hat in the ring)

u/tty5 · 1 pointr/buildapc

dsx will be more than enough then. Get DAC/AMP (like the one I've mentioned above) when you need one.

For the time being I've made some small edits to your build:

u/MiniMoose12 · 1 pointr/headphones

You don't Need a dac. You only need an amp. DAC will improve the sound if the source is bad. But if you have a decent computer, the source should be fine.

Other than that, if you don't want an amp, the 990 32ohm is available. 32ohm can be powered by any smartphone etc. Only difference is that the bass isn't as "tight" and the highs suffer a bit compared to the 250ohm version. Also because they don't make an Limited Edition one for 32ohm, it's going to have a coiled cable which can be heavy compared to a straight one.

Outside of the 990 spectrum, Ehh... You're going to lose some quality/dollar ratio. I'm not sure if the AKG 701 requires an amp. But those would be comparable aswell for this price range.
http://www.amazon.com/AKG-Signature-Reference-Class-Premium-Headphones/dp/B004444OFK

edit: Looks like they only need 62 ohms. They will sound quieter than normal headsets at the same volume-level on your phone, but doesn't look like they need an amp. They also have allot more balanced reference sound compared to the "fun" 990's.

Obviously there are some slight differences between the models, but I don't know enough about AKG's lineup to explain them.

u/Stelekin · 1 pointr/headphones

Location: USA

Budget: I’m pretty flexible if I need to go higher but $150-$200 not including AMP/DAC if needed.

Source: It’s going to be plugged into my PC mostly for gaming but also music/movies.

Requirements for Isolation: I’m mainly looking for open-ear headphones since they are better for gaming.

Preferred tonal balance: Never owned any headphones before so don’t really know what I preffer.

Preferred music: Indie/Alternative

I'm mainly looking for an open-ear gaming headphone that is durable, sounds good, and is comfy enough to wear over a long period of time. Looking at the recommended headphones listm, I decided that the AKG Q 701 would probably be the best for me but before I make the purchase I’d like to get opinions from you guys. I'm willing to go above my price range if it means I get more bang for my buck. Also, I’ve already purchased the Antlion ModMic as my standalone mic.

u/iiREALiiTYii · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

The Kraken's sound signature is really bad afaik. I listened to a friends pair and they sounded ok, but they were kinda muddy sounding and the build quality is garbage.

Here are some headphones I would recommend,

u/DoubleD92 · 1 pointr/headphones

Aaaaaand they're $314 in Canada. RIP.

u/runt9 · 1 pointr/glee

I almost fell out of my chair when I saw Rodrick's headphones. I literally just bought a pair a couple weeks ago. AKG Q701 for anyone interested. Great set of headphones, albeit a little pricy.

u/PregnantMale · 1 pointr/buildapcsales

What would you recommend for long gaming sessions? And would I have to get an amp for either of these? If so which ones? Thanks!

And what do you think about these?

u/iamtom123 · 1 pointr/headphones

AKG Q701

And some sort of mic, such as the Antlion Modmic, Vmoda BoomPro or Zalman Zm-mic, You'll be so much better off with these than just a crappy headset unless you want to go for the Audiotechnica offerings.

(Or alternatively a desk mic)

u/protosliced · 1 pointr/headphones

Well, that's all very subjective. You can get an AKG Q701 on Amazon for $190, which is only $20 more. And they're arguably better than the HD 598.

So this is what I'd get.

For audio get a separate mic and set of headphones. Where you do live, with family, family in your room, where is your PC? Is your door closed, are you alone? If alone get this set of headphones http://www.amazon.com/AKG-Signature-Reference-Class-Premium-Headphones/dp/B004444OFK They are amazing for the money and overall great.

If you are also alone and like a bit of bass get these http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-DT-990-Pro-250-Professional-Acoustically-Applications/dp/B0011UB9CQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1458271803&sr=1-1&keywords=dt+990.

The ears are incredibly comfortable, which allows me to play for longer without my head hurting. The leather head strap is the uncomfortable part. The ridges are not forgiving and get slightly painful after a while.

I just wrapped mine in a washcloth and was good to go...not aesthetically pleasing, but works just fine for killing me some n00bs.

Some people cut the ridges off and others used sponges custom cut to fill the gaps.

  • ATH-AD700's have gotten really good reviews for gaming and are slightly less money.
  • DT880's have also gotten decent reviews but they tend to be slightly more money.

All I can say is buy a decent pair of dedicated headphones within your budget, you can still get good ones in the $50-$100 range. Then just pick up a standalone clipon mic. I got the zalman that just clips on to my headphone cord.

I didn't research the sub $100 price range for headphones, so I can't give you my opinion on those unfortunately, I can only relay what I found a few years back.

OK, I came up with a few suggestions:

$100-150 sennheiser hd558, ath ad700x, akg k612

$150-200 sennheiser hd598,
ath ad900x, akg q701, beyerdynamic dt990

(both akg k612 and beyer requiers an amp, makes the price go up with about $200 if you dont already have an amp), you dont necessarily need an amp for the akg q701, but be ready to crank volumes up to maximum to get a comfortable volume level without an amp, and some people think that the volume is just too low without it.

Should be noted that if you have the cash to go with the beyer, it should perform almost as amazing as the ad900x and q701 with positional sound, but also has among the best bass in the market at sub $500
