This is my go-to. It's a very fun game that you can play with just two people...or a group. I almost always include it as a part of my gift...so long as I can afford it. I've yet to have someone in my circle play this game and not like it.

So let's say you're the 'nerd' type, but not really a huge 'nerd'. You like to watch art house films and listening to small bands but don't look down on others for their taste in music or look like a color co-ordinated homeless person with a mustache and huge rimmed glasses.

Then Smashup is the game for you! It's like Magic the Gathering, but with more possibilities and less drawers full of lands and minions! It's like dungeons and dragons insomuch that it plays off of fantasy and sci-fi tropes established by genres of movies, television, and folk stories.

It's highly addictive, once you get it it'll be hard to stop playing it with friends.

7 Wonders is a great game too. My group just recently started playing this one, and we are really enjoying it. Still haven't picked up any of the expansions yet, but looking forward to them. Another game that might be good to start out with is King of Tokyo, or if you don't mind waiting until October you could get the next installment King of New York. We also like Smash Up as of late, and it is easy to learn as well.

I'm kinda a board game novice I just recently got into it. I didn't even realize there where so many different versions until I just looked. I have the basic version (this one)

smash up: the board game!

I'm not terribly convinced this will win because I didn't see any board games on your wishlist, but I'm putting it anyway- if only to spread the awesomeness that are board games. :)

I recently got into boardgames. Why? Well, 85% of my friends are introverts and boardgames are AWESOME for introverts. It gives you something to focus on (so conversation pauses don't feel awkward), and it gives you something to talk about! I've noticed it has really helped a lot of them come out of their shell - and gave us something fun to do! It's also fantastic for making new friends (it's really good in that stage of getting to know someone/figuring out what to say.)

Also, in Smash Up you can play robotic ninjas. Or alien dinosaurs. Or pirate wizards. how cool is that?!

I play mostly with my husband and when we get a chance we have friends over to play as well, so I will recommend a couple of great 2 player games.

Agricola All Creatures Big and Small is the 2 player version of Agricola. Agricola does play 1-5 and I've played it several times with just two players and it is fun.

Lost Cities

Smash Up I want this one to play with my husband!

Rivals for Catan I haven't played this yet but it's probably fun!

Race for the Galaxy Space! That's almost reason enough, plus it's a really fun game.

You may have some of those. I couldn't find a couple I'd like to recommend on the UK amazon so I'll just link to the Board Game Geek pages for them.

Caesar & Cleopatra

Balloon Cup

You should get yourself Smash Up I've been playing it lately with my wife(who doesn't really even like board games) and we both love it.
And I'd love Cards Against Humanity since I've never played it and we've been looking for a party type game.

Just looking at your board game wishlist makes me want to ask if you're a Tabletop watcher as it seems you have several of the games that they've played on there.

Smash Up

Ninjas, Zombies, Dinosaurs, and more!

  • King of Tokyo

  • Smash Up

  • Forbidden Island

  • Tsuro

  • Room 25

All five of these games should meet your criteria quite nicely. I think all of them, except for Room 25, have also been featured on Wil Wheaton's Table Top, if you wanna check out what the gameplay actually looks and feels like.

Larger text is the only difference? There's an updated base game?

The one I bought was this one:
