I wholeheartedly second the suggestion of Redwall. There are animal battles, but nothing very graphic. There is some adventure and some fear, for example Cluny the Rat can be a little scary, but I think it is offset and handled very well. I am a bit biased because Brian Jacques and I were pen pals when I was about 10.
Wrong era (turn-of-the-century) but the "All-of-a-Kind Family" books by Sydney Taylor are delightful. Yeah I know, they're meant for kids. But they're great. :) http://www.amazon.com/All---Kind-Family-Sydney-Taylor/dp/0440400597/
