I highly recommend the Vesper Holly series.

Edit, also the All-of-A-Kind Family series.

I wholeheartedly second the suggestion of Redwall. There are animal battles, but nothing very graphic. There is some adventure and some fear, for example Cluny the Rat can be a little scary, but I think it is offset and handled very well. I am a bit biased because Brian Jacques and I were pen pals when I was about 10.
