I highly recommend to anyone who loved the show to read Jonathan Abrams' oral history All the Pieces Matter. It's a really enjoyable book.

Funny you should ask, this just came out February 13th 2018.

The casting director did a great job is the short answer, but also the writing was super realistic.

The Wire is the greatest show of all time, bar none.

I'm actually reading a book about it right now. I've watched the series in its entirety maybe 6 or 7 times over the past 10+ years. I'm in the middle of another run-through right now. Finishing up season 1 tonight.

According to Williams in "All the Pieces Matter," he didn't know Landsman was a real person until after filming a few episodes. When the real Landsman saw Williams, he immediately went on a diet.
