How old are the clippers? They could need maintenance or replaced if you're already buzzing against the grain. Make sure to clean and oil the blades after each use. It can help if you put a hot towel around your head for a bit, too; opens everything up, makes it easier to cut (feels good, too).

Razor bumps are created by the hair growing back into the skin, breaking it, and all the related inflammation/infection. Electric razors, particularly the Norelco, work on the premise of lifting the hair above the skin, cutting it, and letting the hair drop below the skin after the tension is released. For a man with even slightly curly hair, this is a recipe for DISASTER. The tighter the curl pattern the worse the results. The Norelco must go!

What he needs/wants is something that cuts close enough to give him a clean look, but leaves the hair at/above skin level so that the curl pattern doesn't dig back into the skin. He needs trimmers. Pick him up some professional quality trimmers like these or these. Make sure to also pick up spray lubricating disinfectant (not plain alcohol!), clipper oil, and store them in a large zip lock freezer bag (humidity protection). They will last literally forever as long as not dropped.

He will need to make trimming part of his daily routine. He may still get "razor" bumps in areas where his hair is particularly curly or if his hair grows fast even with the trimmers. So staying on top of it is a must. Also, running a CLEAN straight edge, like a credit card, against the grain of those hairs through the day may help them not dig into his skin. Most likely though, running a trimmer over his face once/twice a day should keep him clean "shaven" without the bumps.

  Now keep in mind that I plan on doing 95% of the grooming for the rest of my pups life. Since he's a standard poodle, a full groom would cost me anywhere from $75 to $120 (every 4 to 6 weeks) due to his size. So, for me, investing in all of the above will save me a lot of money in the long run.

Pet clippers get hotter because pet fur, after all, is harder to go through unlike our locks. It also depends on the clipper model you have, clippers like Oster's A5 heat like darn hell.

1. Have multiple blades. I have at least two of all the ones I use most. When one starts getting hot I spray it down with this and set it on the metal base of my grooming arm, which sucks the heat right out of it. those clippers DO tend to get hot fast, I've used them once briefly and I was shocked at how hot they got. With a set of clippers that gets as hot as those do, I would suggest using Andis CeramicEdge blades BUT these do have the downside of being a hair more fragile than the regular blades.
   
   
2. Yes, there are cheap grooming tables - they won't be as adjustable as the nice ones professionals use but they will absolutely save your back. Get a grooming table, arm, and a groomer's helper setup and you probably won't need anything else for your own comfort. EDIT: here are some no-frills basic grooming tables. I recently bought this one and it does a great job. Its pretty quiet but the blade gets hot pretty fast so I got a cooling spray from Andis for it and it works well.
