> A few years ago, I read an article by a Roman Catholic theologian who wryly observed that the quality of Western atheism had gone steadily downhill since Nietzsche.

If anyone is interested, this theologian is Dr. Scott Hahn in the context of discussing his book, written with Benjamin Wiker, "Answering the New Atheism". I suffered my way through that book, and it was terrible. He claims that it was designed to be read side by side with "The God Delusion", but it really addresses very few of Dawkin's arguments - and those are badly distorted.

Most of the book is focused on attacking the "tone" of TGD instead of the content. (Quite funny when you consider the insulting caricature of Dawkins on the cover and the disparaging language they use in reference to atheists.) The last quarter of the book is basically a warning that atheists are looking for political power so that they can make religion illegal.

Anyone who gives Scott Hahn any credence whatsoever in the conflict between atheists and Christians is not worth my time.

I'll just leave this here... https://www.amazon.com.au/Answering-New-Atheism-Dismantling-Dawkins/dp/1931018480

Edit: Also, google the Finely Tuned Universe theory.

For books of this nature I find it often useful to look up the one star reviews on Amazon and compare them to the five star reviews.

I'd skip it, based on what I just read there.

Welcome!

Have you read Dawkins' The God Delusion? If so, this book might help you. I have to honestly tell you that I haven't actually read it. I have, however, read a boatload of Scott Hahn, and he is an excellent Catholic theologian and apologist.

The comedian Steven Wright has a famous line: I got a humidifier and a dehumidifier. [Pause]. I put them in the same room and let them fight it out.

Don't do the heavy lifting alone when it comes to fighting a national best-seller. There are plenty of apologists who will help you do the lifting with you.

From the Catholic publishing world, there's this one by Dr. Scott Hahn and another by Patrick Madrid.

Too true. One of the best books I read recently was Answering the New Atheism: Dismantling Dawkins' Case Against God.

Reading a book that systematically destroys Dawkin's arguments from the God Delusion was very revealling - instructive about the way trained, career academics approach argument and rhetoric.

The authors wont be on any interview show, which is a damn shame, as they are far more lucid than Dawkins.

It's not that I'm against atheists or atheism - there are a number of atheists (academics - philosophers) whose work I'm very fond of. But even they can't stand Dawkins - his books are simply too full of crap reasoning and poor research.

What Dawkins does have is presence - a good voice for TV and radio that makes him sound very educated thorough.
