I understated by a good amount. 400$ is the range for a macbook pro with an i5 as seen here
Here's what I always recommend. The price is about the same, but the processor and integrated graphics are significantly faster. The RAM is lower however, so you would want to upgrade it.

This one is my lowest price option that I'm looking at. Would it be a good idea to go for this one and buy RAM afterwards, or should I go for a model with 8gb of RAM already installed? Basically I'm setting out several options, a cheapest option and an ideal option and some inbetweeners, and I'm trying to get a handle on how low I can go before it becomes problematic. It would show up in this list, which is where every single person that wants to buy a used 2011 macbook from amazon is looking. Price it right (with good description and pictures) and you should have no problem selling it. I think for the computers category amazon takes 8% + $0.99.
A computer is a car, it's a tool to get you where you're going, wherever that is. When it doesn't do the job, you sell it if you can.
Resale value is important when considering the purchase price. If you can unload the computer after a few years, trade-in or otherwise, you can afford a better computer.
I couldn't find a new price for it, but Amazon listings show it at $399 to $490. Not bad, I would've expected lower.
Anything with a metal case tends to hold up to wear and tear better, the resale value is higher. HP and Apple both make cases like that, Dell is mostly plastic. The depreciation is generally lower, at least that's what 2011 model MacBook Pro listings hint at.
Some car brands depreciate faster than others, it really depends on the reputation of the vendor and their willingness to support older equipment.
