You have to plug the headset into the controller unless you bought the Gen 3 Astro A50 with the receiver base for Xbox one.

For this you will need:

• One Micro USB to Female USB 2.0 Adapter,
  
• Two Male to Male USB Cables (Pick your length accordingly),
  
• Two Medium Sized Binder Clips

• One Astro A50 headset (Xbox version is shown, will work the same with PS4)
  
  Edit: it has been brought to my attention that not all micro USB adapters are the same. Some have longer tabs than others. Astro A40 also very good. If you want to spend double, go with the A50s.

Yeah, you need to buy the Xbox One version (Black/Green). If you buy the PS4 version (Black/Blue) wireless chat won’t work on Xbox One

Get the Astro A50s on sale. Despite what the packaging says, you can use them for Xbox 1, PS4, and PC (just flip the headset to "PC" when plugging into the PS4). You'll want to grab a better USB-to-microUSB cable for them though, the one that comes with it shorted out after just a couple months for me.

They're so light I often forget I'm wearing them and almost accidentally went to the store with them still on

Expensive but great. I have the A40's and use them on XB1 & PC. Same as the 50's but mine are wired. Those are not out yet but are Gen 3 and require NO cable to controller. Completely wireless.

I don't own these headsets, but pretty much all reviews agrees that Astro A40 and Astro A50 are the best high end headsets you can buy.
