Com as taxas de desalfandegamento + IVA + taxas e tachinhos essa diferença será muito menor e às vezes pode-te chegar até a sair mais caro, experimenta aqui para ver se compensa mesmo o trabalho que vais ter.
E se, por exemplo, olhares para a Asus 1080 founder's edition, na Amazon Americana fica a 700$(627€) + os portes (que serão algo entre os 20 e 50$) e taxas (não consigo utilizar o Duty Calculator pois já excedi o numero de cálculos e eles não dão mais por isso não te posso dar uma estimativa do custo total mas ficará à volta dos 800€), e na PCcomponentes (Espanhola) está a 790€ e pagas mais os portes que não chegarão aos 10€ (pelo menos é o que a calculadora deles me dá, que é 5.95€) e não tens de esperar um mês para te chegar a casa e tens acesso à garantia com muito mais facilidade que se encomendares dos EUA (até porque há certas garantias que não se aplicam noutros países, por exemplo portáteis comprados nos EUA não têm garantia na UE) já para não falar que como a distância é maior também há um maior risco da tua encomenda "desaparecer" ou aparecer estragada.

Generally PC parts aren't that differently priced. If you wait a while it'll fall in line, but for the most part I'm guessing because there is a limited stock and Australian vendors know they can get away with a higher price. That being said:
