For the people waiting on The Eminem Show vinyl rip, hang tight. I just ordered a new (expensive) cartridge to improve my TT:

Should be here by the end of the week (I hope)

I would recommend the ATLP120 + AT440MLA. Had this setup for the last month or so and couldn't be happier. One thing to keep in mind is that the built in amp for cheaper record players like these are terrible. I'm fortunate enough to have inherited my fathers Onkyo reciever with a good phono amp from the late 80's. Honestly it takes a fair amount of money to get a decent setup that truely brings out the quality of analog audio.

Amazon has it for $181.97. Turntablelab isn't having that much of a sale, they're just bringing down prices to what the other online retailers are at.

Here's what I'm running:

Table: Technics SL-1200 MK 2 (with KAB Fluid Damper mod)

Cartridge: Audio Technica AT-440MLA

Soundstage: Harmon Kardon 730 "Twin Powered"

Speakers: custom cabinets with drivers from PAS, a company known for quality recording studio monitors.

Overall very happy with the way the system play together. I'm really looking forward to spinning a high-quality pressing of The Fragile in the near future.

What's your budget? I asked a similar question last week about a Pioneer table I picked up. I got a lot of recommendations to check out Audio Technica cartridges. Check these out as appropriate for your budget:

AT120ET
AT440MLE

I'm waiting until next month to go for the AT440MLE personally. I also plan on getting the AT Headshell which should work for you too.

First, remember that the stylus attaches to a cartridge. You have to have the cartridge changed to accept different needles. A better cartridge is always a good thing, but some tables aren't worth working on. I haven't looked into the AT-LP60, so I can't speak to it specifically.

A good cartridge can be damn expensive. With a $70 table, I think the best bang for your buck would be to first get a new higher end table. It will cost about the same as a better cartridge and will usually come with a better stylus anyway. (Plus, this gives you the added benefit of either having a spare table, or being set up in two rooms.)

----------------

Some high end cartridges can be more than $600 with the styli going for a couple hundred themselves. Audiophile stuff can run into the thousands, but you'd have to have more money than you know what to do with to mess with that stuff.

The next cartridge I plan on buying is about $160 by itself.

That cartridge has a little brother. The needles are actually interchangable

One of my tables is an Lp120. I swapped out the cartridge with an AT 440MLa and I am happy with it. My only issue with it is that it's fully manual. Most of the tables I have owned over the years have been semi-automatic and I have grown accustomed to it.
