YTA. You're putting him in an awkward situation that he can't control. Just have a BBQ and invite some friends over with or without kids, make it family friendly event. A lot of parents throw afternoon BBQ's and have a couple beers/soda/water for the adults, juice/water for the kids, chips, potato salad, hamburgers, hotdogs, baked beans. Get some disposable plates and cutlery to make clean up easy. Turn on the sprinkler or get an inflatable water slide (cheap on Amazon so your step daughter can use it repeatedly this summer, make sure it comes with a blower. The one I'm eyeballing is going for around $200). Seriously, the best adult and kid birthday parties I go to are BBQ's... Everyone is happy and entertained, and you can still have a few beers and enjoy yourselves. If your guests drink, just make sure they have an Uber or DD. You can still have fun social gatherings as a parent/step parent. You just gotta think outside of the box and realize the kids are there and they need to be included.
Edit: Amazon's prices fluctuate daily, so today it is higher than the price I said, but keep an eye on the price. When I put it in my cart it was on sale.
