Black and Red notebooks are really nice to write in and sturdy as well.

How are you filling the converter? It's very likely you're not much more than half full. If you're going to buy a syringe, you can also fill the converter with a syringe to make sure it's filled completely from bottom to top.

If you want to use the cartridges, you can't buy them empty, so just buy more Pilot ones in either black or blue, and then don't throw them out after you use them the first time.

Your paper is also very absorbent, so you're using a lot more ink than you need to, like writing on a sponge. But you'll need to weigh to costs of your ink waste versus the cost of more expensive paper. I would recommend Black 'n' Red notebooks for about $7, if that's not too expensive for you:

Black n Red users: Are you able to get the pages to tear cleanly off at the perforations? I haven't gotten a clean tear once and its really starting to annoy me!

What size do you have for notes? I feel like there aren't enough pages and that's why I was thinking of getting a ream for a couple extra bucks.
