I enjoy Quarto and I think it's worthy of a purchase. If you want something that is specifically "connect four of something", I'd also recommend you check out Gobblet. It has a similar wooden aesthetic and I generally find this one more fun, it will really test your memory as smaller pieces get hidden by the larger pieces. If you lift a large piece and reveal that underneath it was your opponents color and that piece makes a four in a row, you automatically lose, you don't get to place the large piece you just picked up.
Gobblet is like tic-tac-toe on steroids.
It's got a 4x4 grid of squares, and each player has three stacks of four nested cylinders each that fit on over each other kind of like those Russian nested dolls. The objective to put four pieces in a row, but you can move pieces around and you can put your larger pieces on top of your opponent's smaller pieces ("gobble" them). A big part of the game is remembering which of your pieces are covering what, because if you lift a piece to move it you have to move it, even if doing so reveals an opponent's piece that finishes a row and gives them the game.

OP recently sent me Gobblet, and it's already become one of my favorite 1v1 board games. The objective is to simply line up 4 of your pieces in a row on a 4x4 grid. However, a unique twist is that larger pieces can "gobble" up smaller pieces, similar to Russian nesting dolls. (Shout out to "Stacking"!) This mechanism adds a memory element. Each player starts with 3 sets of 4 nested pieces. On a player's turn, he/she can place one of the exposed pieces from any of their sets onto an empty space, they can move one of their pieces that is already on the board to an empty space, or they can "steal" a space that the other player occupies--provided that their piece is large enough to engulf the other player's piece. Now if a player moves a piece that has already engulfed another piece, the previously played piece is back "in play." Trying to keep track of a constantly changing board of gobbled pieces will really keep you on your toes as the game progresses. And there's more strategy than you might think in deciding when to use various sized pieces in order to maximize your options and limit your opponent's. It's not a brain-burner like chess, but it's not nearly as simplistic as tic-tac-toe. It's easy to learn, challenging to play, and incredibly addictive. Even if abstract strategy games aren't your cup of tea, you might be surprised at how much fun you can have with this game. :)
