The car is in her name so she essentially owns it and can take it away at any time, and she can claim you stole it if you took it from her when you move out. Just bewcause you pay the note, doesn't mean the car is yours. The car is yours when your name is on the title, yours and yours alone.

I'd say tell her you want your $2k back, return the car, and find something on Craigslist to buy in full so you only pay car insurance. Sure the car won't be nice, but it will get you to A and B. That's the only thing that matters. I owned my first car for a year before I got rid of it for a new one, it cost me $1,200 and it was a 2001 Nissan Altima. Traded it in after a year of saving, got $200 off another car that was originally $2,400 so I only paid $2,200. Owning a car > car payments, absolutely. Gives you time to save up for something new.

In the mean time, buy a safe (I have one of these, silly as hell but it works), find a car you want, buy it, take the title to the DMV, get it transferred to your name, and lock the title away so she can't steal it and get her name on it (which is illegal, by the way). Therefore if she threatens to take your car away or takes your keys, that's essentially theft and she can get in trouble.

This car is absolutely no benefit for you whatsoever. She got the car to exert control over you. That's it.
