If changing his diet to chicken and rice fixes it, then the dog food is the problem. That could be for a few reasons though.

  • sensitivity to chemicals/preservatives in the dog food
  • sensitivity to lower quality or less fresh ingredients in the dog food
  • sensitivity or allergy to specific ingredients in the dog food
  • Dry food will puff up in his stomach where real food won't.
  • Defective batch of dog food, contaminated with something bad.

It's worth ruling out as many of those factors as you can.

I'd start with a limited ingredient canned dog food made from chicken and rice, like California Natural's chicken & rice canned formula. http://amzn.com/B000WFLX22. I say that because it's about as close to plain chicken and rice as you can get in a dog food.

If she does okay on homemade chicken and rice but can't handle a canned LID chicken and rice dog food, then the problem probably has something to do with ingredient quality or sensitivity to chemicals/preservatives. There's no good way around that. You could try an independent dog food brand with good quality control and fresher ingredients like Sammy Snacks or Acana/Orijen, but no dog food is really and truly fresh.

If she does okay on the canned LID chicken & rice food though, then next I would try a LID chicken & rice kibble, to see if it's a problem with dry food. Same primary ingredients, chicken and rice. Same brand if possible. Just dry instead of wet. For example, California Natural's Chicken & rice kibble formula. (link).

If the LID chicken & rice kibble causes trouble, then her problem might be with dry dog food. At that point I'd go back to the canned LID diet, and then try transitioning to different canned foods and see if they're okay too.

If the LID chicken & rice kibble goes well though, then you know she's okay with at least some dry dog food, and you could start experimenting with different ingredients. Try transitioning slowly to other LID dog foods. If chicken and rice is okay, then maybe next you try turkey and rice. Then maybe turkey and potato. Then duck and potato. And so on...identify individual proteins and carbs that don't make her sick.
