Yeah they are their own beast. I did a decent amount of research and I got these for hunting and general looking around at nature while hiking etc.

I cant remember 100% but I know I paid significantly less than that. With that being said I would have rather paid 9$ for the amount I use them, which is MAYBE a few times a year.
For hiking you can do a lot worse that a pair of compact lightweight birding bins such as the Celestron Nature 8x42s. They're waterproof and rugged and the 8x42 will give you a nice bright, wide field of view for birding and landscape vistas.
If you want them more for Astronomy purposes, I'd recommend a 10x50. However unless you're quite experienced at using bins you might get a bit of distracting hand shake with that much power. You can remedy that with a cheap retractable monopod but that's one more thing to carry. My personal favorite 10x50s are my Pentax SP's, which I find myself using more often than any of my scopes.
The Nikon Action Series is also a very popular budget bin.
Celestron Nature DX 8x42's
$139. Ok so $39 over, but I've been super impressed with these. Good value, easy to adjust, durable, portable, lightweight & compact.
Heavier, bigger bin's made me fidgety, ornery & exasperated to the point of not even using them. Stumbled on these & have been pretty happy with them. They were on backorder for entirely too long, but in hindsight, the wait was worth it.

For the money (around $120) I don't think you can beat the Celestron Nature DX 8x42.
I really like these bins for the price. I think they won Best Binoculars Under $200 a few years ago.
I recommend the Celestron Nature DX 8x42. They're only $140 (price has dropped a lot) but they're very high quality. They're multi-coated and waterproof / nitrogen-filled for anti-fog. It's the best bang for your buck, imo.
