Hello :-)

Good advice so far!

Visually, an equatorial mount does not matter. Nothing in this price-range is accurate enough for "serious" astro-photography. Something with a simpler tracking-mount, such as the Celestron Nexstar 127 slt; $440, is good enough for planetary observing and some imaging. Deep-sky is limited to snapshots. Visually, 5" aperture is also limiting. Most money fgoes towards the mediocre mount.

For planets, light pollution does not matter. But only three planets show noteworthy surface detail.

Imagining is completely different to day-time photography. It's not as simple as point to what you see and take an image. Stacking, processing and such can take hours until you're happy with the result. You need a precision tracking mount, which costs more than your budget already... Without the telescope. Getting a large aperture and an imaging mount on a budget simply does not work out :-(

A computerized GoTo mount with auto-alignment seems to be a must-have, but it's really just making things more complicated. By the time I've set up my SLT mount, I already observed three targets with my manual dobsonian. With any telescope you will have to know a few basics anyway, and then finding things manually is no issue... Especially with all the free apps available.

If you want to dabble in imaging, you don't even need a telescope for some nice wide-field shots. Have you tried capturing the milky way, the andromeda galaxy? https://www.reddit.com/r/telescopes/comments/2ttydz/300_budget_looking_for_a_telescope/co2ivce/

Visual focus:

A dobsonian neither has a tripod, not an equatorial mount, nor is it automatic. But it does offer you the best views for your money. Large aperture, simple yet rigid mount. Especially regarding galaxies and nebulae, a 5" is simply not going to show nearly as much as 8" or so.

Make sure to check the links on what to expect visually. Galaxies will never be the colorful swirls you see on images, as our eyes can't perceive color of faint objects and especially not the (near) IR / UV spectrum.

See if there's a local astronomy club. Perhaps you can take a look through some telescopes (like The_Dead_See already suggested) :-)

Clear skies!

How close are these open field areas? If you're driving how much room is available in the vehicle for the telescope? To start you off here are my two top suggestions:

Orion XT8 plus

Celestron Nexstar 127SLT

Morthylist:
Item which would most make you seem like an old posh Englishman: Keep calm and carry on mug ("Random" WL)
Most "oh god, I would never be seen with this in public" looking item: As much as I love the movie, I'd still be a little embarrassed to be carrying The Little Mermaid around ("Moving Pictures!" WL)
Most phallic looking item: Uh...a sword, I guess ("If I had a million $$$s" WL)

Akeleielist:
Most geeky item: Coffee mug with a caffeine molecule on it ("Random" WL)
Item which would most help you achieve a goal: Running shorts to get my butt back in shape ("Fandom" WL)
Best item to bring to a deserted island: A telescope? I can look for ships on the horizon during the day, and look at the pretty astronomical sights at night! ("If I had a million $$$s" WL)

Love you both! :)

Definitely confused. I saw where you mentioned none are good for the balcony, but I think you were quoting something I mentioned. SO it appears the Mak is what I need along with a tripod. Any tripod suggestions? It appears one comes with it based on Amazon.

Also do you have a brand for the Dobsonian 8? It seems to be a standard name.
