we use these pouch toppers that regulate flow so that LO can't squeeze all the puree out in a gushy fury:

Is he self feeding at all? My daughter had very little interest in being fed and preferred to feed herself. Pouches are a great option at this age if he can hold it we bought these at our local specialty baby store and they're awesome because they can't squeeze out the pouch all over the place. And it's much softer then the hard plastic tip on the pouches themselves.
It's not too bad. I use a brush. We also really like these slow flow caps. You can also use them on the premade food pouches as well. They help from making a mess when the baby squeezes them.
Omg, seconding the suggestion for the ChooMee I just bought a set for my almost 8 month old and it's definitely helped!
If you do end up going with pouches, either reusable or store-bought, I highly recommend these pouch toppers to prevent your baby from squeezing the contents of the pouch all over the place.
