If you wan't to eliminate the card this Linksys AE2500 is the best USB adapter out there, I've bought like 50 of these cause they're so darn cheap. I just hand them out when people have WiFi problems.
Was it this one? That's the type the usually give out, and which usually works well, but idk if you got a different one.
can you afford $11?

Hmm. Well, I'll let you know when I get a new n router if mine works (it won't be for a few weeks though).
You could always try something like this:

Just FYI, amazon has refurb Linksys 2500AE's for supercheap:

I really like them, I have 3. They get returned because they overheat at 100% power output, just turn down the power and they're golden.
I like these. This one's a refurb, but they're not too expensive new either.
The user guide for your router should be available on the manufacturer's website, just look for the sticker (usually on the bottom) to get the model number.
Setting up a broadcast on 5 GHz is usually not much different or more difficult than one on 2.4 GHz.
One note to keep in mind: 5 GHz does not go as far or penetrate objects as easily as 2.4 GHz band. That being said, your best bet is to get that router set up in 5 GHZ so you can get out of all the 2.4 GHz noise you're unable to do anything about currently.
Edit: 21, not 23 non-overlapping 5 GHz channels
