This entire region has a very rich history spanning 400+ years (no offense to the native population), from first landing to Jamestown through WW2 and today. If you can get over to Book Exchange in Ward's Corner, they have a shelf or two devoted to just local history. Selection varies based on what's been traded in or recently sold but there's always a couple interesting titles at least when I look.

That's where I found Conscripted City: Norfolk in World War II. Narrative-wise it was pretty dry but I really enjoyed the facts and references to present-day locations and it presented a vivid "slice of life" for Hampton Roads through the early- to mid-20th century .
