The method they used to close were little rubber nubs that tended to get loose and then the cover would start to slip during games like beat saber. I got these as I was starting to loose feeling in a finger due to pinching a nerve during gameplay (I'm old) and so I figured something like this would help.
My eventual solution was to say fuck it to the covers and just cover my hands with weight lifting gloves like this sort of thing:

That looks like an awful lot of work considering the "Touch condoms" people use are only 20 bucks off Amazon. For CV1, VRCovers.com is great, has a lot of different options but probably the pleather one is what you're looking for.
As for grips, i had some rubber ones on my CV1 touch controllers. Like these

Not mamut but the silicon gives you extra grip for when your palms get sweaty
What worries me is that these are friction fit. I don't think that will be enough to keep these in place while playing games such as Echo Arena. I'm currently using these grips and even with the clips at the top, the rubber grip slips down when using fast throwing motions.
Since no one has a Quest yet, and the Quest controller is a different shape so we wouldn't be able to test them yet. Mamut might be working on it, so I'd follow up with them.
As for getting looser, no the Mamut grips we're solid. I really liked them, but again the battery issue sucked.

These would get loose over time. There are little nubs on the front that hold it on, and over time they'll fail due to pulling them off every time you need to replace batteries.

The grips on Amazon are crap. I bought some and the 2 latches kept coming undone during gameplay. Also the grip button got blocked after a couple weeks of use. I returned them.
