Gold leaf (basically tiny specs of thinly shaved gold) is sometimes used as a garnish at fancy restaurants. It's actually edible, doesn't really taste like anything. The gold itself is less expensive than you'd think due to the very tiny amount, though usually if you're going to a place that's garnishing with gold leaf the prices are going to be through the roof anyway.
