Vaseline boils at 260 C, and has a flash point of 205 C.
I don't think that will be a suitable filler.
As for the thermite (ignoring whether or not you'll be able to get a proper composition), United Nuclear puts ignition temperature for thermite at 1650 C, however that (could?) change with composition. Thermite also requires two different metals, if you insist on using scaps and grinding them up (probably a waste of time for the savings), just use copper for the highest thermal conductivity, and peace of mind. Otherwise just buy some, it's cheap.
