Also can be done on the grill. I can't see buying a waffle iron just for this. Pan method, grill method, oven method, stone method -- they all work just fine. If I were going to buy a special piece of equipment, I'd buy something that could do more than just waffles and pizza -- like a toaster/broiler or one with a rotisserie so you could cook a multitude of things and not just waffles, pressed sandwiches and unconventional pizza.
We got this one for our wedding 5 and a half years ago and use it almost every day, love it. Easy to clean and relatively even heating. I make everything from broiled fish to banana bread to 12 inch frozen pizzas in it.
I have a Cuisinart convection toaster oven that is 12 years old and going strong. We have the same model in my kitchen at work that is easily used 10 times a day.

i've had it for probably 12 years. i bake bread in it occasionally. even custom cut a baking steel for it. still going strong.
