If you're looking for more information try searching under "new religious movements." I took a class on the topic in university but I don't have my course work available while at work.
I searched on Google scholar, which might give you a good start for academic sources.
This was the book used in my class and I believe Dawson is one of the leading researchers on the topic.
I found the "who joins them" section particularly interesting, gives a good rundown of the sociological factors that leads one to join an NRM.
I'll get back with the course work that I may have available.
