A flamethrower is never a home defense weapon (assuming you want to keep the home), and is likely at least as illegal for you to make as a firearm would be. Build your own single shot 12 gauge before you build a flamethrower. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1wV3lmbSv4

Paintball guns are worthless unless you use OC paintballs, then it's like targeted pepper spray.

Your best bet might actually be to go for a bow and arrows. Can you get a compound hunting bow and razor tip hunting arrows? Make sure you also get practice arrows and a target so you can get used to it. Get a kid's compound bow if you have never used one, the adult ones have a high pull weight and are hard to pull back until you build muscles for that. Such a bow with hunting arrows is more lethal than most firearms.

A cheaper and easier option is a hunting slingshot, like this: http://www.amazon.com/Daisy-Outdoor-Products-Slingshot-Yellow/dp/B004T8RX22/ref=zg_bs_3307780011_3

Get some of those .38 caliber hunting steel slingshot ammo, and that will certainly stop or deter most attackers.

Tasers are disappointing in practice, the ranged ones don't always land, and have only one shot, the melee ones are too close range, and make you vulnerable to knife attacks. Pepper spray is also not great, if you do use it get the ones which spray 15 feet or more, and practice spraying yourself so that if you accidentally get caught in the spray when you use it you won't be surprised by how it feels (it hurts).

If you want to go crazy, get a repeating crossbow: http://www.amazon.com/Cocking-Crossbow-Pistol-Cross-Arrows/dp/B001E11HH4/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1344379194&sr=1-1&keywords=repeating+crossbow

That looks silly. You could bait a camouflaged net with a pull line. Place it near where you know of some birds you want to eat and when they come for the seed reel them in hand over hand. Here is a shitty diagram. Or you could... get a slingshot.

Edit: Birds have amazing eyesight, so the camo is very important. Also they are very agile. I remember trying to shoot doves with buckshot one time (it was Iraq, I was bored and tired of MREs), and I swear they were dodging it like Patches O'Houlihan.

My gift for turning 30 was recovering from major dental surgery the day before. I had always thought 30 was when I had no more excuses, I was an adult, and I entered that new stage of my life on pain meds that were only partially effective, alone in my apartment (my wife had evacuated my daughter who was far too young to understand Papa needed to rest and heal, and wanted to jump all over me and sing loudly and do all the things small children do that a post-surgery person wants nothing to do with...).

The surgery wasn't mentioned to most, and none of my friends remembered to call (at least) and say happy birthday. I would have slept through the phone ringing, or been too sore to get up and answer it, but at least I would have known they thought about me :P

WL choice!

They're not protected, but there ARE laws about discharging a firearm within city limits, so you'd have to kill it with your bare hands.

Don't worry, I'm right there with you. In fact, if one went for one of my cats I probably would take it on bare-handed. o_O;

But AFAIK, there's nothing that says you can't have a [slingshot](Daisy B52 Slingshot https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004T8RX22).
